Because if it is, wouldn't that also mean that the phrase: "(SIDS) accounts for about 37% of .. infant deaths .. in the U.S., and the cause of SIDS has remained largely unknown." is redundant?
If we knew the cause of death, then would the death actually be classified as SIDS?
When I do field research about sleep in populations that are unfamiliar with public health recommendations about sleep, I need to explain the concept of SIDS to them to ask if they have seen anything like that in their population.
Does it sound reasonable to you to explain it as: those sad times when you find the infant has died, but no one knows why, and you may not even know when exactly either (since it is a diagnosis of exclusion) @ColdOneder
@YamanKSingla @DorsaAmir In dolphins the two hemispheres of the brain are connected by a much smaller corpus collosum than other mammals https://t.co/aRAnadVtEt
Typical hours of sleep are highly divergent across mammalian species, so hard to say if this has any impact on that
@DorsaAmir I'd also add to that some work from my lab (from before I got there and that I had no part in) that shows fur seals have unihemispheric sleep when they are in the water for days at a time, but "regular" bihemispheric sleep when on land
@jaclynasiegel I didn't see anyone mention this but I feel it's important enough to make sure someone says it: all the more reason to develop the tools now to make an academic one healthy and fulfilling for you! I didn't start until I was a postdoc, and I really didn't need to wait so long
@ssprall That's what happens when you're calling out everyone including the reviewers for blindly following an arbitrary convention but they aren't aware that they are blinding following an arbitrary convention ๐คท how else can you confront peers to communicate that message though?
@ErichsenDaniel I think you make an excellent point about dark rooms. If someone can't sleep because they are stressed or preoccupied, a dark, non-stimulating environment will make sure nothing distracts them from that stressful preoccupation. I can't imagine that makes falling sleep more likely
@DorsaAmir I wonder if this reduction in jaw size/ underdevelopment of throat musculature is related to the seemingly (though formally untested) increase in sleep apnea in westernized populations relative to those who eat much coarser fiber content throughout their lives starting as kids...
I recognize that my work was funded over other fully-deserving applicants in the same pool, and I am honored for my work to have been recognized. Mostly, I am excited to have the opportunity to finally focus on my research! I hope to make the most of it. Novel insights TBA...
I'm pleased to announce that I've officially been awarded a post-doc grant from the NSF to study "Sleep adaptations to seasonal changes in light and temperature". I look forward to making the most of this opportunity to learn about hunter-gatherer sleep!

What I wish I knew when I started: The goal of grant writing is not to get a grant. It's to write a proposal that deserves to be funded. That is the ONLY part of the process we can control. Funding decisions are stochastic in nature, and we CANNOT take them personally.
