It was terrible Mr Vice President what happened. And lessons will be learned. But here’s a thought - maybe concentrate instead on why 44000 Americans died last year from gun related deaths, and what can be done about your dreadful disease before you start lecturing others
Trump said something to me in 2016 that I’ve never forgotten.
He asked if I thought the British were going to Brexit. I said no because economically it made no sense.
He said you’re looking at it as an economic decision. It’s not. It’s an emotional one.
Three weeks later, June 2016, they Brexited.
That was the moment I understood something real about the reality of politics in the US and the UK.
Would I be surprised if Farage became Prime Minister? Not really.
The Conservatives had their run. Labour is struggling.
We’re in an anti-incumbency era across the entire West and Reform has never actually held power.
So people shrug and say it can’t get any worse, let’s try something new.
I hope it doesn’t happen. I think their policies are asinine.
But I said Brexit couldn’t happen either.
I am proud and humbled to have been selected as Labour’s candidate for Makerfield.
These proud working-class communities represent the very best values of our country and they deserve so much better. It would be my honour to work for them every day, if elected as their MP, to achieve that.
Many people here feel Westminster isn’t working for them and they are right. I am standing to change that and get the voice of these communities heard loud and clear.
I am glad that this by-election has finally put the places that make up the Makerfield constituency into the national spotlight. They have been neglected by national politics for too long. It is a good thing that all political parties are now on the hook to tell the voters here what they are going to do for them.
More than anything, people need life to be more affordable again. As Mayor, I have brought in changes which are helping, such as the £2 fare cap, free bus travel for our 16-18 year-olds and removing the 9.30am restriction from older and disabled people’s bus passes. But there is only so much I can do from Greater Manchester. If elected, I will have a relentless focus on reducing people’s everyday costs and bills and well as securing the investment these communities need.
I have been an elected representative in Greater Manchester for 25 years. Throughout that time, I have fought for the people of the North West of England on so many fronts. I am now ready to bring the whole weight of that experience to fighting for the communities of the Makerfield constituency and would be privileged to be given that opportunity.
15 years ago I was fortunate enough to work for Steve Rotheram. In that time we spent much of it working on the disclosure of the Hillsborough documents and through it I saw @AndyBurnhamGM up close, working for the families.
I saw him behind closed doors, away from the cameras. He was every bit as angry, determined and passionate to reveal the dark underbelly of the state and fight for justice when he was sat in his office at 10pm at night writing a speech, as he was sat in a Sky News studio with the nation watching his every word.
When it comes to standing up for the working class, he’s the real deal and the strongest political communicator I’ve seen. I’m looking forward to hitting the doors for him in this hugely consequential by-election.

I regret to inform you that we will be publishing a detailed analysis this week of the £5m payment to Nigel Farage, and whether it's taxable. It is likely to annoy *everybody*.
(except tax advisers, which is all that matters)
James O’Brien couldn’t have articulated it any better 👏👏👏
The King lecturing Britain on housing crises and poverty… while dripping in billions of jewels?
“You could house 100 homeless people by flogging that jewellery down the pawnbrokers.”
Cognitive dissonance doesn’t get more glaring than this. Spot on. 🔥👇👇👇
He lives in Thailand. He goes by a Thai name. He holds 12% of Tether - a cryptocurrency that made $13bn last year. He has given Farage and Reform £22 million.
He gave Farage £5m personally before he stood for parliament.
After last night's historic results, this is the most important background read in British politics.

At what point do we stop pretending our newspapers are ‘news’ and start calling them what they are…
Promotional pamphlets for the billionaires who own them and the agendas they’re selling.
In 2024, The Sun led with several stories regarding Starmer receiving clothes & spectacles from a Labour donor - even repeating accusations he’s “King of the Freebies”
In 2026, The Sun hasn’t published a *single story* about Farage receiving a £5m gift from a Reform donor
Excuse me. But banned why? Are we seriously saying Farage UK should have its own 24/7 news and propaganda channel with barely a peep from @Ofcom but if another party uses what Farage and Co have said in an election broadcast they can’t show it. Madness. Anyway do watch it. It is very powerful
🚨Sunday Times investigation today:
Richard Tice’s companies appear to have failed to pay £100,000+ in corporation tax on profits, while funnelling over £1 million in donations to Reform UK.
Tice calls it a “technicality” but critics say it looks like aggressive tax avoidance benefiting both him personally and his party.
The party that campaigns hardest against the establishment and tax avoidance now finds itself accused of exactly that.

#HIGNFY on Trump's illegal attack on Iran
Ian Hislop, "Trump literally thought the way to stop wars is to start them, and historically, that hasn't proved to be true"
Armando Iannucci, "No"
Ian Hislop, "He claimed that all of America's war aims have been fulfilled. It's impossible because they didn't have any"
Armando Iannucci, "And he said that he didn't start it, they started it, and what he did was pre start it, because he knew they were going to start it"
Ian Hislop, "And he is having negotiations with people who aren't imaginary"
Armando Iannucci, "That's true"
Ian Hislop, "Trump is not a fantasist who imagines that the voices in his head are the opposition in Iran negotiating. That's not his modus operandi"
Paul Merton, "No because he's a malignant narcissist"
Armando Iannucci, "He's the only person I know who negotiates with himself and comes out with a worse deal"
On Easter morning, this is what President Trump posted.
Everyone in his administration that claims to be a Christian needs to fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from God and stop worshipping the President and intervene in Trump’s madness.
I know all of you and him and he has gone insane, and all of you are complicit.
I’m not defending Iran but let’s be honest about all of this.
The Strait is closed because the US and Israel started the unprovoked war against Iran based on the same nuclear lies they’ve been telling for decades, that any moment Iran would develop a nuclear weapon.
You know who has nuclear weapons?
Israel.
They are more than capable of defending themselves without the US having to fight their wars, kill innocent people and children, and pay for it.
Trump threatening to bomb power plants and bridges hurts the Iranian people, the very people Trump claimed he was freeing.
On Easter, of all days, we as Christians should be reminded that the son of God died and rose from the grave so that we can be forgiven once and for all of our sins. Jesus commanded us to love one another and forgive one another. Even our enemies.
Our President is not a Christian and his words and actions should not be supported by Christians.
Christians in the administration should be pursuing peace. Urging the President to make peace.
Not escalating war that is hurting people.
This NOT what we promised the American people when they overwhelmingly voted in 2024, I know, I was there more than most.
This is not making America great again, this is evil.
