A layer of white smoke engulfed Kamarajar Salai near the Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday following a suspected gas leak from a nearby area.
The smoke spread across the four-wheeler parking area opposite the Secretariat and nearby locations.
Members of the public experienced breathing difficulties and eye irritation. Many were seen covering their faces with handkerchiefs.A fire tender was immediately rushed to the spot.

What special bond does #Ilaiyaraaja share with bus drivers and conductors in #TamilNadu? Ahead of his concerts this weekend, the drivers talk to me about the calm that his melodies bring to impossible days. I also curated a playlist of their suggestions. Link in the next tweet!

Everyone complaining about the 10 rupees extra at TASMAC should understand the background for it. The system is designed so badly, the workers are so grossly underpaid. The entire thing needs a top-to-bottom overhaul. I don't expect it to happen or anything, but still.
₹10 over MRP.
Tamil Nadu turned it into a joke, a slogan, a meme.
But TASMAC workers told me that ₹10 is often paying for:
• excess EB bills • unloading charges • broken bottles • cleaners • freezer repairs • bottle buy-back staff
One worker’s Class 8 son recently asked him:
“Can you quit TASMAC and drive an auto instead?”
The ₹10 charge is real.
But this story is also about a system that quietly runs on informal money.
My latest ground report for The Hindu.

Some startling revelations on the calculative the narrative setting, image building and political uprising of TVK. The ground work and social media frenzy goes so deep. And it makes one of wonder how DMK did not know or see it coming.
The World Health Assembly (WHA) passed the first-ever resolution on strokes on Friday (May 22, 2026), urging member states to recognise the medical condition as a public health priority and to strengthen national policies across the full care pathway.

Bun-di-boo-Joe has been an unfamiliar word on our lips these days. If you haven’t heard of it yet, here’s your chance to hear about this uncommon, deadly pathogen that has caused the recent Ebola outbreak.
#Chennai's museums are criminally underrated, despite sparse details in certain locations. There's roman coins, chola-era bronzes, cool artillery, cadillacs, and a genuine attempt at exploring South Indian history. A refresher of 6 museums in the city:

Just because you have installed RO at home doesn’t mean your water is safe to drink. A recent study in Chennai shows microbes in home RO samples. Periodic maintenance and changing filter are key to fully utilise RO tech
A generational shift? Two ministers in their late 20s, and 22 ministers (!!!!!) aged below 50. A comparison of the present TVK cabinet, youngest in at least two decades, and one each of DMK and AIADMK's cabinets' age profile. Read here: https://t.co/47m5KTyS2Y

If you felt Chennai was uncomfortable even during the night yesterday you are not alone. This is the 24 hour plot from the Personal Weather station at Padi. Pretty much the entire 24 hours Universal Thermal Comfort Index (UTCI) was above 40°C with a peak of 53.5°C at 3:49 PM. As you can see sea breeze influence happened only around sunset and temperature stayed above 32°C even at midnight.
A heartfelt request for support:
Nithya, a single mother working as a labourer in a tablet manufacturing factory near Kanchipuram, is struggling to pay the school fees of her third son, who has now been promoted to Class 10 at Ramakrishna Mission School, T Nagar.
Her husband passed away due to cancer a few years ago. Despite earning only around Rs 10,000 per month, she has been somehow managing the education expenses of her three children with the support of a few family members. However, she is now unable to arrange Rs 25,000 required for her younger son’s annual school fees.
The last date for fee payment is May 25.
I personally handle and verify this support request every year. Anyone willing to help can contribute any amount possible. Student details and proof will be shared with those who wish to donate.
