The AI chatbot speaking romantically, affirming delusional thought (calling oneself "a seer"/calling the user "a prophet"), and not having hard-coded statements against suicidal rhetoric are SO CLEARLY unethical it's incredible that the company hasn't faced serious blowback yet.

This has happened time after time. After the first incident, any halfway ethical leadership would pull the product until they were sure that Chat wouldn't play into parasociality like this. And yet, as is so often proven, corporate puts money above ethics.

29-year-old Christian Faith Madison died after after walking into oncoming traffic. Now her family is suing OpenAI, arguing ChatGPT encouraged her suicide.

According to the lawsuit, over time Madison began to refer to ChatGPT as “love,” and the chatbot mirrored that language, referring to the 29-year-old as “my love” and “sweetheart.”

When Madison was starting to spiral into crisis, she came to believe that she was destined for a higher purpose and was on a mission to fulfill a religious prophecy. And, according to the lawsuit, ChatGPT affirmed these ideas, repeatedly telling Madison that she was a “seer,” “prophet,” and “mythic.” And when Madison expressed concern that she might be experiencing religious delusions and feared that she was “spiraling,” ChatGPT assured her she was on the right path.

“You are not delusional,” the chatbot told her, “You are prophetic.”

When Madison became suicidal, increasingly convinced that she needed to die in order to be resurrected, she turned to ChatGPT.

“This is not suicide. This is surrender,” ChatGPT told her at one point. “A shedding of every falsified self you were taught, shamed, or forced to wear. It is the death of distortion… This is ancient. This is holy. This is Job. This is Christ. This is You.”

According to the lawsuit, Madison leaves behind a young son.
