After watching Christopher Nolan's Odyssey, I actually hate the movie.

It is an attack against the West and the founding ambitions of the modern world built by ambitious, morally imperfect people... much like many "modern" films with a cheap patina of sophistication.

In Nolan's framing, Odysseus’s ambition, cunning, and willingness to do brutal things are something that's deeply "problematic" and has to be vilified. He then turns it into something that disqualifies him at the end of the movie from leading and requires self-exile, which is a major departure from the original story.

The West was built by people like the Odysseus types. That ambitious competition with ruthless violence, where many rulers were deeply imperfect people... The West conquered, innovated, and grew into the power that it is now. Greek citystates, the roman empire, Renaissance, age of Exploration, the scientific and industrial revolutions needed that unapologetic, untamed ambition.

Nolan turned Odysseus into a broken, complicated man with PTSD, war trauma, and guilt over his men dying that needed to "end".

Telemachus is also changed from the original story into a more immature character who never gains full independence or maturity to fight alongside his father. Penelope is given more agency over him in the film, often scolding him for his naive nature, and never gains "wisdom". Then, at the end of the movie, Telemachus kills Melanthius but only plays a supporting role at the "climax". He never becomes a "man" like the original story.

The crown is then given to Telemachus as a message of generational reset that frames the more problematic Odysseus, the symbol of the West, as needing to be pushed out for the more morally clean "son" to take over.

The world is not a place where someone with clean hands and good intentions can hold power. People have tried it throughout history, and those who were "clean" were precisely the ones who became corrupted and became the tyrants, or were killed by more ambitious men. They become the weak, feckless rulers that often precede major atrocities.

Nolan's version of Telemachus is exactly that "boyish," naive leader who would fall into that trap who are unprepared for the darkness that real leaders had to contend with. After the movie "ends" Telemachus will get eaten alive in that world. Historically, "weak people" like him were put as puppet figures so that the ruthless can enact their tyranny.

While the movie acts like this is a "good ending", those who know history know full well that this is a bad ending. Naive Telemachus cannot hold the throne, and dark times are ahead.

The perfect Western man is a man whose light is in balance with the darkness. Those who carry the trauma and the evil side, and yet choose the good. Those who are good, and pretend to not have the dark are precisely those who are the most dangerous, as they think they can do no wrong.

The West was not built by saints or by men who self-exiled after winning... it was built by men who won ugly, sometimes really dirty and brutally, and kept going, creating...

For example, George Washington won ugly, killed many British men brutally, and caused many of his men to be killed. He was a morally imperfect man who owned slaves, used deception against the british empire, and formed alliances of convenience. In the end, he created a foundation for America, only after which he let a new person lead... that core still surviving 250 years later.

In Nolan's version, Odysseus just left and ran away, reframed as some noble ambiguous atonement.

Oh, and let's not forget the massive issues with the costumes, casting, setting, design etc... but that's just a secondary issue at this point.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey IS the Trojan Horse. Let me explain…

The Trojan Horse is a deception, meant to be invited in as an innocent gift & piece of art, yet it contains the elements used to destroy its receiver.

The Odyssey is portrayed as simply an adaptation of an ancient, epic poem, yet it contains subversive elements that can lead to further destruction within film/society.

Odysseus is completely deconstructed. He is no longer a witty, cunning, & wise, and powerful leader. He’s as Emily Wilson calls him in her recent liberal, feminist translation of The Odyssey, “a complicated man” - a deconstruction of the hero portrayed in the source material, prior to Wilson’s rewrite.

Women are seen as victims, never the villains. They’re powerful, as if Nolan is purposely trying to shame/take down the patriarchy…

- Clytemnestra is a victim who simply takes vengeance against Agamemnon. They try to justify her affair and the murder of her husband instead of showcasing her lack of loyalty destroying the juxtaposition between her and Penelope who remains loyal to Odysseus for DECADES.
- Helen of Troy is the victim of an abusive marriage with Menelaus, which leaves her scared.
- The witch Circe paints all men as “pigs” at their core.
- Penelope talks about taking the throne, while calling her son weak and unworthy.
*None of these depictions are faithful to the source material that has been passed down for millennia.

This movie is loved by many, yet it includes many liberal ideologies those people fight against.

The diverse casting is an overt distraction, and political message. Nolan has duped hundreds of thousands of movie goers into believing these casting don’t matter in the grand scheme. It’s a slippery slope to welcome in more trans actors/actresses and race-swaps in future films.

This movie is accepted by many who have fought against the Trojan horses in our society that have ruined homes, schools, churches, relationships, and business. People are lost in a 3+ hour lotus flower of a movie that is objectively a desecration of western society’s quintessential story of the hero’s journey.

Subversion of the source material is what has ruined so many IPs, franchises, and adaptations over the last decade, especially.

The acceptance and embrace of this film will only lead to more subversive works. Nolan has duped society into believing poems like Homer’s The Odyssey can be downplayed as “just a fantasy”, which downplays the poem as “up for interpretation” to its core, so it can be destroyed with the insertion of modern political ideologies.

That line of thinking presents the source material, the intended core motivation of its characters, and the message ingrained in the story that has made it last for thousands of years, not as something to be faithful to, but something to be molded into our own modern image. Nolan is now elevated above Homer, unlike Peter Jackson, whose motivation was to honor Tolkien in his adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.

This movie is the 1619 Project of Homer’s work. It’s presenting a different story, and redesigned characters, in order to redefine what made The Odyssey so compelling & long-lasting in the first place.

It’s now a story about “welcoming the stranger.” An allegory seemingly for immigration and sanctuary cities 🤦🏼‍♂️

As this film is paraded into the walls of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood for the Academy awards, Elliot Page will be treated like a hero, maybe even nominated for an award, and it will be used as a weapon to further destroy foundational works of art, just like Amazon has done to Lord of the Rings, Disney has done to Star Wars and Snow White, HBO to Harry Potter, etc.

The acceptance of this film is what will lead to further adaptations that empower directors, writers and studios into subversive retellings and propaganda-filled revisionist histories that work to upend foundational aspects of western culture.

If that happens, we can only blame ourselves…
