There are plenty of reasons to criticize Marx, but the standard Austrian critique often starts by attacking a version of Marx that is easier to knock down than the one he actually developed. Marx did not argue that every hour of labor automatically creates an equivalent amount of value. Digging a useless hole in the Sahara for eight hours does not refute Marx because socially unnecessary labor was never the same thing as socially necessary labor time. If nobody wants the output, the labor does not simply become value because somebody worked hard producing it.

Post-Keynesians do not need to accept Marx's theory of value to recognize this. Keynes himself gave us a much more useful way to think about a monetary economy. Production takes place because firms expect monetary returns. Employment depend on effective demand and expectations about an uncertain future. Prices are not God like holy signals revealing some objective map of consumer preferences. They emerge from institutions and firm pricing decisions.

That is also where the Austrian story about Menger and subjective value becomes too simple. Consumers obviously have preferences, but preferences alone do not determine the structure of production or the distribution of income. A person can desperately want housing and still exercise almost no effective demand if they lack income or access to credit. Meanwhile, firms with market power can administer prices by applying markups over costs rather than continuously discovering some market-clearing price through an auction process. Kalecki understood this particularly well.

Nor do post-Keynesians have to defend Soviet central planning to reject the claim that markets perfectly coordinate decentralized information. Capitalist economies routinely produce unemployment and idle factorie. Keynes's point was precisely that there is no automatic price mechanism guaranteeing that decentralized decisions will generate full employment.

The claim that government intervention necessarily destroys the information required for economic coordination is equally difficult to square with the history of modern capitalism. Governments build infrastructure, finance basic research, provide education and healthcare, stabilize demand during recessions, and directly purchase enormous quantities of private-sector output. Modern economies are mixed institutional systems, not a choice between an Austrian textbook market and a Soviet planning ministry.

Marx was wrong about plenty, and post-Keynesian economics departs from Marxism in important ways. But replacing Marx with the equally sweeping claim that subjective value, flexible prices, and decentralized markets automatically coordinate economic activity does not solve the problem. Keynes showed why. Investment is driven by expectations formed under fundamental uncertainty, output responds to effective demand, money and finance influence real production, and nothing guarantees that individually rational market decisions will add up to a socially desirable outcome.

You do not have to become a Marxist to recognize that capitalism can fail. That was one of Keynes's most important insights.
