600,000 psych beds (90%) have closed since 1960- without any commensurate increase in community treatment/housing.
Completely not coincidentally, an equal number of patients are now languishing in prison dungeons or living rough on the streets.
Is this any way to run a country?
Only in a broken healthcare system
I can have a patient on a medication for years.
It has improved their mental health and the quality of their life
But insurance declines to cover the medication
Just because it’s January….
Vicious Cycle:
Most psych disorders interfere with sleep/too little sleep harms brain & makes psych disorders worse.
Every 1st interview should inquire re sleep problems & sleep hygiene often crucial part of treatment. Regular sleeping pill use makes things worse.
Nice graphic:
Today I spoke with a doctor who just received his license to prescribe marijuana. I asked him the difference between Sativa and Indica. He had no clue. Can we just stop with the charades already?! #legalizeit#endthewarondrugs
Instead of asking EMPLOYEES
Do you have a hx of mental health conditions?
Are you taking any medications for a mental health condition?
We should be asking EMPLOYERS
Have you created a safe work environment where people can seek help/treatment when they need it?
Evidence shows if you have ONE work colleague who you can confide in & share your struggles / wins with,
You’re more likely to stay engaged and not burnout.
Remember: we can make a difference with an N=1. 🙂
Personally, I love that.
