The form records a request. It cannot show what the paralytic hides, what oversight does not count, or whether consent was free across all its working parts.
It cannot show the care that was refused, the household income lost to illness and caregiving, or the pressure that can sit inside a marriage. It cannot turn a neighbouring pocket of subsidized housing into proof that a wealthy area has no poverty. And it cannot make “married” a safeguard when disabled women face high rates of partner violence.
This article follows the record behind the signature: the procedure, the oversight, the missing data, and the alternatives that may not have been there.
It is not an argument for taking choice away. It asks that real alternatives exist before a signature is counted as free.

Title: Traditional Communication Access

Cognitive and neurological evidence shows that communication and reasoning are distinct. Difficulty speaking, writing, or organizing thoughts in an expected order does not establish a lack of internal logic or intelligence. In Dawson’s study, Autistic participants scored an average of 30 percentile points higher on a nonverbal reasoning test than on Wechsler IQ scales. In Soulières’ study, Autistic participants solved matrix reasoning problems with similar accuracy and shorter response times, while using different patterns of brain activity. These findings concern specific tasks and groups, but they show why verbal performance alone cannot measure a person’s reasoning.

People with brain injuries, intellectual or developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, dyspraxia, apraxia, learning disabilities, or autism may communicate in ways others do not immediately understand. Some messages require time, context, or communication support. Difficulty following someone does not establish that their message has no meaning. Milton’s Double Empathy Problem also asks us to consider misunderstanding in both directions.

Dismissing an argument because of its delivery leaves the argument unanswered. Using communication differences to question a disabled person’s capacity or autonomy has much greater consequences. Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities protects equal legal capacity and access to decision-making support. The UN committee’s guidance says that even a mode of communication understood by very few people must not bar that support.

If you disagree, address the argument. How someone communicates does not disqualify them from making it. We are different, not less.
