Oregon has a REALLY big employer that I don’t think we talk about enough:

Oregon state government.

In 2019, Oregon state government employed about 40,900 people.

By 2025? 49,300.

That’s roughly 8,400 additional state-government jobs — a 20% increase in just six years.

And here’s what really caught my attention: while Oregon’s state-government workforce grew substantially over that period, Oregon’s private sector LOST 22,700 jobs in 2025 alone.

Why does this matter?

Because families and businesses are constantly being told that costs have gone up and government needs more revenue.

Well… costs have gone up for ALL of us.

When a business can’t afford its expenses, we don’t get to automatically charge our customers more. We cut expenses. We prioritize. We become more efficient. We reconsider hiring. We figure it out.

So before Oregon asks its families and businesses for another dollar, I think it’s completely reasonable to ask:

Has the state seriously looked at the size, cost and efficiency of its own government first?

I’m not talking about eliminating essential services or the people actually doing the work.

I’m talking about accountability.

Because “we need more money” shouldn’t always be the first answer.
