@SteelWatch2030 is urging EU lawmakers to stay the course on CBAM, despite calls from some in the steel industry to delay implementation. They give 3 reasons why:
1. Free allowances have gone on long enough: For nearly two decades, Europe’s steelmakers have received generous allocations of free permits to emit greenhouse gases. This is a hidden fossil subsidy that weakens the incentive to decarbonise.
2. Regulatory consistency is essential: Climate regulation including carbon pricing, is meant to shape long-term investment decisions. If policies are changed at the last minute, they lose their credibility — and every climate policy to come will lose its teeth.
3. Europe’s direction is already prompting global action: CBAM is already having ripple effects around the world. To backtrack now would send the wrong signal and not only undermine Europe’s credibility but also weaken the momentum of climate action globally.

“German steel companies should be supported to continue their transformation and not be locked into the coal-based steel industry which has no future."

[🧵1/2]🚨Has steel decarbonisation progressed in 2024?
This is the question we’re asking as 2024 draws to a close. Right now, optimism feels in short supply, but looking at the big picture of 2024,SteelWatch sees an industry that is perhaps, at least, at the tipping point.
