This @SmallArmsSurvey interview with Amb. @MaritzaChanV is informative and inspiring. She continues to demonstrate her dedication to inclusive processes in which the voices of underrepresented groups such as women, youth, survivors, and civil society are fully heard.

Let's meet this call to action, friends! The UNPoA review conference is one critically important place, but we also need action at local, national, subregional, and regional levels!

🇩🇰 & @CostaRicaONU continue to #UNmute civil society in the @UN.
Today, in the UN Charter Committee, the PR of @RDenONU, on behalf of 58 States and the @EUatUN, emphasized the vital role independent civil society plays in advancing the UN's principles and purposes. #UNCharter
Important preparatory work to ensure that #RevCon4 of the #UNPoA on small arms and light weapons is both ambitious and successful. It's terrific to see President-designate @MaritzaChanV helping move this forward! She'll support full implementation of #UNPoA "in all its aspects"!
Happening now! @UNRCPD and Nepal are hosting the Asia Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting on #RevCon4 of the #UNPoA on #SALW, in Kathmandu, Nepal gathering over 20 States in the region to tackle illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons. Supported by 🇪🇺 and 🇦🇺.
This is terrific news for #RevCon4, @UN_Disarmament, and the entire community that's committed to the robust implementation of the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons! Congratulations, @MaritzaChanV -- this is so well deserved!
Today, the Group of Latin America and Caribbean countries endorsed the nomination of Ambassador @MaritzaChanV, Permanent Representative of @CostaRicaONU, to be President-designate for the Fourth Review Conference #RevCon4 of the @UN Programme of Action on Small Arms in 2024.
@CostaRicaONU makes the important point that the UN Charter includes a commitment to reduce and minimize the resources that are devoted to armaments. It's past time for States to meet this commitment.
Costa Rica urges all States to embrace Article 26 of the UN Charter—building a security system that minimizes resources diverted to armaments.
Let Article 26 guide us as we work towards the Sustainable Development Goals! 💪🌿 #UNCharter#GlobalSecurity#StepUp4Disarmament
Tuesday I thanked nurses, doctors & pharmacists at @MedStarGUH who serve with splendid kindness—and saved my life over 5 months. I finished 6 rounds of 5-day chemo sessions—which they organized so I didn’t have to miss votes or hearings—and I rang the bell! A new chapter begins.
Philly folks -- this sounds like a terrific event! @PhillyThrive is doing powerful and effective environmental justice work. (Also, great quotes from my "kid" @r_merrigold)
.@PhillyThrive is hosting a day-long summit on Saturday, April 15 called Healing Land & Repairing Harm.
The event features a candidate forum, a play written by teens, and workshops on gentrification and jobs.

America doesn't have more mental illness than other countries.
America doesn't have weaker school security than other countries.
America doesn't spend less money on law enforcement than other countries.
But we have all the mass shootings.
Not hard to figure out why.
As @MaritzaChanV says, simple inclusion of women is insufficient. It's not just a question of numbers. The outcome document from the 8th Biennial Meeting of States on small arms sets the appropriate standard; the full, equal, meaningful, and effective participation of women.
On this day, I further urge Member States to include a disarmament component in Resolution 1325.
Res 1325 should not just be the inclusion of women in negotiations, but rather the inclusion of gender-sensitive women & men who are aware of the gendered impact of weapons.

This is a great opportunity to recognize the critical importance of education on disarmament issues! We have so much work to do. Glad to work on these issues with so many dedicated colleagues and friends. #IDDNPA@UN_Disarmament
Today is the first International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness (#IDDNPA). This new International Day seeks to promote better awareness and understanding of disarmament issues, especially for young people! @UN_Disarmament

Important work to ensure that machines aren't given the decision of when to end human lives. I'm not convinced that humans should be trusted with that responsibility either, of course. Pleased to see @CostaRicaONU leadership here and on many other important security issues #AWS
Why do ethics, law, security, and the protection of civilians from autonomous weapons present such major challenges?
First, the idea that a machine could ultimately decide to end a life devalues the idea of humanity & degrades human dignity. #AWS
@RebeccaSolnit@phillythrive is doing terrific climate justice work around HILCO's redevelopment of the 1300 acre former PES refinery site in Philadelphia. They're working to ensure that the redevelopment meets community needs first and doesn't perpetuate the harm already done at the site.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. #Congress DO YOUR JOB! Start by banning assault weapons, requiring background checks on all purchases, and restricting ammunition purchases.

The #January6th 2021 coup attempt and assault on American democracy began here. We must never forget. And we all must understand how it happened, hold the perps accountable, and take the steps necessary never to let it happen again. Read the Jan. 6 Report: https://t.co/RMm6liV7K7
