That’s so important to remind yourself like are you now standing for things your eight year old self would be proud of? Even if it meant sacrificing a lot of personal gain just for their integrity
@USAOWTC#wtcper it’s not very often that you can find a graphic novel that can display the seriousness and magnitude of the story as well as Persepolis does the style of the illustration almost reminds the readers that this is about a child’s life it makes it more meaningful
With the highest pedestal Pat tends to put Achilles on it’s easy to see their relationship only though his eyes and doubts but as much as it stings it wasn’t one sided and he wasn’t the only one who was to be devastated by the loss of the other
With the narrator being Patroclus it’s very easy to connect with him and Achilles and feel their connection. As the story climaxes we can see how the story is developing and with the loss of Achilles it’s heartbreaking to see but interesting to see how it unfolds! #WTCSong2
That’s a good point, like maybe because Patroclus secretly agrees he isn’t worthy of Achilles and has internalized her sense of justice as infallible as a god, he’s afraid Achilles will eventually agree with his mother and turn from him because he sees himself as lesser
@USAOWTC#wtcSong1 I think the distinct portrayal of Thetis as cold and ruthless and doesn't understand love speaks to the lack of mutability that is often associated with the Greek pantheon. She is the goddess of Justice and justice should be standard and without emotion.
Dude fr, culture is somewhat out of individual control but culture like is us? So be that change or like stand up for people who need acceptance and you’ll already be building foundations for social transformation
Dude for real, if we just look away it’s only going to get worse all we can do is look into the mess and learn from it and apply that knowledge to look for solutions and try our damndest to make better choices most applicable to everyone
Idk I mean that seems pretty brave of us to keep enduring those nightmare scenarios over and over, can’t we only begin to grow stronger once we face this part of ourselves we fear more than anything?
Every night we let ourselves go to sleep, where we may be met with nightmarish situations that we would never want to face in real life. That does seem pretty reckless to me. #WTCMag@USAOWTC
Every time people talk about unborn children that’s what I think of, how many more of the greats were right in front of us women, but not valued enough to be educated, or POC that aren’t given the opportunity to give what they have bc they were undervalued and still are
I’m glad times have changed. When he talked about women not being able to have a Shakespeare’s genius attributes I found that interesting and he was right. I’m glad I can get education now a days, and get recognition. #WTCRoom
But that can be way more detrimental than the rewards it’s worth, everyone you’ve ever met knows a different version of you, not the one that’s all of them together you know yourself, if you stake everything on what people think of you you might lose yourself
honestly prioritizing others opinions of you isn’t so bad. I mean we need to impress future employers or peers and in many cases their perception of you is everything #wtcmods
those whose reputation is life or death always made me feel for them, self image is something to really grapple with and to let go of expectation can seriously feel like a free fall, as a combination of both, it takes strength not associate your value with how you seem to others
I thought it was interesting how he points out 2 categories of human needs-those we need to survive and those we want to look better than the people around us #wtckeynes
Honeslty the honor concept since I guess it’s less of a western ideal obviously has always stumped me because here it’s like even if you win dirty at least you won. So to kill yourself for honor is wild to me but more in a what honor would be worth killing myself over way
I hate to agree just because getting away from cynicism is really hard now with all of the outlets in our faces about only bad things, but do we have free will in this argument? If it’s all for selfish gain is there any common ground at all that isn’t influenced by self benefit?
but think about it, humans ARE selfish, even if the aim is to genuinely do something for someone else, it's because their happiness benefits your own. Or because you want them to like you more. Their hearts are in the right place, but he's kinda right. #wtcfreud
Yeah like by denying smth exists you’re just playing devils advocate for your argument when like you could be using outside information to strength it or just broaden your perspective
My 6th grade science teacher refused to teach us about evolution because she didn’t believe in it and that she believed in God. Maybe if she read this she could seen that it didn’t have to be one or the other. And that they can go together @USAOWTC#WTCDar
We generalize to be able to find connections but I wish we could just find different aspects and categories rather than anything depending on outward appearance to decide who deserves our respect. Hierarchy is natural but if we’re aware of it can’t we change it?
The manifesto basically explains a society where there is no class or higher class, and we are all equal. It’s sad but our society will never reach this. We humans tend to group things cuz that’s how our brain works. It’s our natural instinct. #wtccm
I like to think of like being able to lose yourself in your work as a gift but not to be separate of it, when I lose myself in something it’s because I’m passionate about it but that’s just art for me and that’s a privilege that I haven’t had to work to simply make ends meet
The ideals Marx was introducing such as losing yourself in your work or religion becoming less of a person was interesting. Hard to associate it with romanticism.#wtcMarx
I’ve actually always found that comforting in a spirituality, like the universe was here before us and we’re just a coincidence in a split second speck of time that coincided with what is around us, like so many things can go wrong w humans it’s a miracle we exist
#wtcrom@USAOWTC the caterpillar poem shows how everything in nature, no matter how small, contributes to the bigger picture of things. Then the moon poem shows how big nature can be and how we’ll never be able to amount to its greatness.
Since humans are unreliable narrators of their own stories anyways like history being written to make us look better can we even trust like everything that is considered infallible in a religion? Or is it just a reflection of societies morals of the time?
@USAOWTC#WTCPaine
Being born in a very religious country felt like it was kind of forced in a sense to believe in God. It wasn’t until I moved here where I questioned how this whole story of Jesus began in the first place. Is the proof in the pudding?
Plus even with evidence if something makes you feel out of your depth it can be hard to accept or to think about, something might not be healthy for you but it’s a crutch and you stick with it rather than face the consequences that are scary, like smoking
#WTCPBS I'm interested in Percy's idea of the passivity of the mind. He wrote that the mind is passive to new beliefs because of insufficient evidence. I wonder what his thoughts would be on cognitive dissonance?
The only thing that I like about that twist on the noble savage trope is like how despite the “civilized” (Victor) being noted as more intelligent he’s blindsided by it, he plays god but is ignorant to the common sense of a deemed savage, just to be kind and accountable
We've talked a little about the Romantics and how they really liked the idea of the "noble savage". I can see def see that influence here when the creature is begging Victor to just let him stay in the wild where he will live with the beasts in peace #WTCfrank2
Unpopular opinion but if I was Victor I would simply not create a another living thing to fill the ever-growing Irreparable void within myself lmao sorry bout not coping with your instability Franky but I’m different
Oh victor, when are you gonna learn you can’t fill a void of emptiness with a monster you created yourself. I feel for him though cause this was definitely targeted at my emotions. #WTCFrank1
