It's messed up, indeed. Let's break it down. Ilias Kasidiaris is obviously — or at least was — a hardline national socialist. So was Golden Dawn, the party with which he was elected in 2012 and again in 2015, serving as its press spokesman and, for many, its No. 2.
Despite its Nazi roots, Golden Dawn attempted an ideological shift from Nazism toward the radical right, changing its ideology and its charter, as well as its political rhetoric. Nevertheless, it never ceased to be a party of anger and protest, voted for by Greeks from across the political spectrum in a punitive mood — which turned it into a threat to the political system and to the Samaras government, which began to feel Golden Dawn breathing down its neck, even among its own audience.
The murder of a left-wing rapper by a minor party member, in the aftermath of a football match, at a sports bar, was pretext enough to launch what was indeed a political prosecution of Golden Dawn's leadership and parliamentary group, along with dozens of lower-ranking members.
In 2020, the party's leadership was convicted of forming and directing a criminal organization — despite the prosecutor's recommendation for acquittal — and thus nearly all of them were sent to prison. Earlier, following Golden Dawn's collapse in the 2019 elections, Ilias Kasidiaris had founded a party, which he initially continued to lead during his imprisonment.
Subsequently, the government introduced a disgraceful and unconstitutional law, according to which a party could not participate in elections if a leading member, its president, any candidate, or even its founder had been convicted — even at first instance — of forming and directing a criminal organization.
In this way, the government stripped the political rights not only of Ilias Kasidiaris, but of everyone who had declared their intention to run as candidates with his party. It should be noted that Ilias Kasidiaris had not received — and still has not received — any sentence depriving him of his political rights.
These machinations, as you can understand, point to anything but the democracy the government supposedly wants to safeguard. And unfortunately, they create binding precedents that can be used against others as well.
All this, from the country that gave birth to democracy — and where political correctness, the woke agenda, censorship, and illiberalism have taken deep root.
For the record, Greece has one of the strongest communist parties in Europe, with a continuous presence in Parliament since 1974. The party wants to abolish democracy and establish the dictatorship of the proletariat. Meanwhile, the MEPs of the governing New Democracy — a supposedly center-right party — have repeatedly voted against European Parliament resolutions condemning the crimes of communism. And that's because anti-communism in Greece is... a crime.
