🚨🚨🚨At the end of an all-day bargaining session yesterday, we told management they have a deadline of 12:01 am, Monday, Nov. 4, to bargain in good faith and present us with an acceptable proposal or we will begin our ULP strike.
Across Illinois, there are nearly 90% fewer newspaper journalists working today than there were 20 years ago— and small towns and suburbs have seen the biggest declines. Alden has more readers than any newspaper company in Illinois, and those readers deserve better
Sadly, these short-sighted cuts seem to be part of the business model of TribPub owner Alden Global Capital— which has reduced staff at Tribune newspapers by half in the 3 years since taking over the company.
Wendy is a leader among the team that bargained a historic first contract with @tribpub that improved wages and benefits for Guild members.
Bargaining took 6 years! It is not lost on us that one of our most vocal, effective activists was laid off just 2 months later
That work, which helps bind our increasingly fractious communities around local events and experiences, will fall to the already over-stretched staff that remains— if it still gets done at all. @tribpub readers, and workers, deserve better.
Nancy was the friendly voice on the end of the line when readers called with with tips, queries, complaints or praise for @PioneerPress. She loved how her work, from compiling community calendars, to the "Throwback Thursday" photo feature, helped knit together suburban towns
Wendy is a loyal employee who has worked for @TribPub's suburban Chicago papers— under a parade of different owners— for four decades.
TribPub plans to drop arts and culture news in the suburbs— meaning the vibrant entertainment scene outside Chicago proper will lose coverage
Add 2 more to the list of 1000s of cuts that are hurting local news in Chicagoland.
Monday, @GuildSuburban unit chair and longtime @tribpub entertainment editor Wendy Fox Weber was and @ThePioneerPress editorial asst. Nancy Swanson were told their jobs were being cut
We lost several colleagues during the fight to better jobs, and we would like to thank @MeganA_Jones, @SBakerSun1, @erin_hegarty, and Ted Slowik for their dedication and hard work.
Our badass joint bargaining committee has brought home our first contract, which offers yearly raises and keeps a 401k match the company wanted very badly to take away. We bargained over the course of 5 years and every win was a fight.
We also kept the company from controlling our personal social media and exercising total control over our ability to have second jobs, which many journalists take because of low pay. When we fight, we win!
More Latinos in Pilsen are college educated & make more money.
‘(The) gentrification that has occurred, has not been an exact displacement yet of Latinos, versus it has been a shift in the types of households of Latinos.’
Some say it is Gentefication—> https://t.co/N87W7XZ6qN
