My game Air Hockey Arcade was finally approved on May 26th 2021 (my 48th Birthday) exactly 3 months after submitting on Feb 26th! Mentioned as I felt it was poetic!

Handmade the old fashioned way!
I’ll tell you what was better in the old days. You could have opposing opinions and still keep your job or share a pint together. Makes no odds to me where your land lies. This is diversity. This is what diversity means.
This is absolutely criminal from @DefraGovUK and the Flour Manufacturers. Folic Acid could be added to flour for up to two years without appearing on the label! Adding something toxic to many people to food without announcing it is outrageous . This has been done with no notification to consumers. https://t.co/1K1j6Lnlmb
I wrote a PlayStation emulator earlier in the year. It doesn't run everything I want yet, but it was great fun and I learned a lot of interesting things along the way (don't look at SPOILERS.md if you ever intend to write your own one day) https://t.co/t6qG35gqM9
I completely forgot to post about this yesterday as I was too busy avoiding the heat and celebrating my birthday 😅
Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of me releasing Air Hockey Arcade on the Quest Store (originally on App Lab, which has since disappeared).
I originally released it as a free demo, but after running out of money trying to get online multiplayer working properly, I ended up taking contract work which pulled me away from the project for nearly 3 years.
Last year I finally started working on it again, and a couple of months ago I began pushing updates regularly once more. So much had become deprecated that huge parts needed reworking. Since the original release I’d say 50%+ has been rewritten, moving to OpenXR, Vulkan and Epic Online Services.
Despite zero marketing beyond the occasional post on here, people are still playing it and daily active users are slowly climbing again, which honestly feels pretty encouraging.
The big question now is monetisation. It’s still completely free, and with 90,000+ lifetime users, the challenge is figuring out how to turn continued development into something sustainable without ruining what people already enjoy about it.
Under the hood it’s all still running on my own custom engine, “Reality Engine”, mostly hand-written in C. That said, AI coding tools have suddenly become genuinely useful this year. Codex in particular has been enormously helpful for things I either had little experience with or simply didn’t want to spend weeks writing myself, Cloudflare-backed telemetry systems, Android JNI work, even helping port Reality Engine to iOS.
It’s definitely an interesting time to be a programmer.
I honestly have no idea what the future holds. Tech seems rough right now, games especially so, and XR is a strange niche where almost nobody uses their own engine tech anymore and I still believe writing your own tech is the best way to get the maximum out of mobile based hardware!
Still… trying to turn this project into something sustainable has also been some of the most fun I’ve had programming in years. Onwards and upwards!
Oh go on then! Today marks 30 years working as a programmer in the games industry! It’s mostly been fun. Shame the industry seems to be in such a bad place right now. 🤞things pick up!
breaking #DesperadoEngine up to work more efficiently with jobs/fiber, like IDTech 7. I've got a good chunk of the model loading, materials, and composable render setup for fiber. Not much more to break up there until I have custom loading instead of using Assimp loader.
To be fair, I hadn’t when I posted my reply. I did after, and to give credit to @MickWest, parallax when flying can be really confusing so we’d ideally be able to access whatever data there is on the flight path of whatever drone or otherwise captured the footage.
I still don’t think it’s a balloon, nor do I necessarily think it’s anything unusual. I don’t know what it is, but it looks odd.
When I was at Codemasters, I became part of the ex Evolution Studios team, the same people behind Driveclub, working on the rendering side.
It was a real pleasure being among them. They were incredibly strong rendering engineers, and after seeing their work up close, it completely made sense why Driveclub turned out the way it did.
The sad part is that before that, I was at Sony. My devkit had Driveclub on it, even my chair had an Evolution Studios logo on it. After Sony shut the studio down, I ended up working with what was left of their equipment and legacy, and it was a daily reminder of how that decision marked the end of a very talented team.

Can’t quite believe the ZX Spectrum turns 44 today! 🙏 I’m even less willing to acknowledge I’m more than a decade older than it!
On 23 April 1982, Sir Clive Sinclair unveiled a rubber-keyed, rainbow-striped 8-bit computer at the Churchill Hotel in London. It cost £125. It sold over five million units. It contributed significantly to the launch of the British IT industry.
Around twenty thousand+ games were made for it including of course Jet Set Willy, Atic Atac and my personal fave - The Way of the Exploding Fist 🤜 💥
In the middle of an AI arms race, it’s worth remembering how simple the computing experience used to be.
What was your first ZX Spectrum game?🕹️
I’m still trying to find the words for this.
During the film launch “Super Stream” for The Cholesterol Code, Dave Feldman hosted nearly 8 hours of live conversation with some of the top professionals in the ketogenic and metabolic health space. In this short clip, you get a small taste of what I heard all day… I’m beyond speechless that they know my story and feel it matters.
I’ve never hesitated to share what happened to me. At first, I just hoped my story might reach one person who needed to hear it. Over the last few weeks, I’ve started to realize that it’s reaching many more—and that through this film, my family’s journey has the potential to bring hope to countless people who feel stuck, scared, or helpless.
That’s a heavy weight to carry… but I wouldn’t trade it. I’ve been given the gift of a second chance at life, and I’m committed to paying it forward.
