On to Recommendation #3 by the ILAE Task Force on Neonatal Seizures.
This one may be a change in practice for many units! It is a consensus-based recommendation but takes into account some of the important work done by the Neonatal Seizure Registry!
@BetsyPilon, the Executive Director for @HopeforHIE said, “I have seen years of concern and anxiety from our families staying on anti-seizure medication, perhaps unnecessarily.”

👍🏼👍🏼 Exactly! And a reminder, newborns with suspected early life epilepsies require genetic testing 🧬, tailored treatment, and ongoing antiseizure medication #neotwitter#neurotwitter@RShellhaasMD

Medications can be awesome, but it's even better not to use them. For instance: if a newborn has seizures, and then stops seizing, this study shows we can usually stop the drugs before sending them home: https://t.co/wy9provdZi
👍🏼👍🏼Exactly! 1️⃣Are the neonatal seizures acute provoked? 2️⃣Have they stopped for at least 24hrs on EEG? 3️⃣Have the parents been educated re what to do in case of suspected seizures? If yes, then stop the meds! #neotwitter#neurotwitter

Did you know that MRI may predict cerebral palsy (CP) at 4⃣ years in neonatal encephalopathy (HIE)?
Risk of moderate to severe CP:
- Low (<20%) in all brain injury patterns except when the basal ganglia/thalamus MRI risk score = 4 📷67%
