Opposition fighters in Syria, in an unprecedented move, have totally taken over numerous cities, in a highly coordinated offensive, and are now on the outskirts of Damascus, obviously preparing to make a very big move toward taking out Assad. Russia, because they are so tied up in Ukraine, and with the loss there of over 600,000 soldiers, seems incapable of stopping this literal march through Syria, a country they have protected for years. This is where former President Obama refused to honor his commitment of protecting the RED LINE IN THE SAND, and all hell broke out, with Russia stepping in. But now they are, like possibly Assad himself, being forced out, and it may actually be the best thing that can happen to them. There was never much of a benefit in Syria for Russia, other than to make Obama look really stupid. In any event, Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!

Damascus has fallen

#Syria has immense geopolitical significance. It's been the only state ally of Iran in #WestAsia. It was a key conduit between Iran and Hezbollah. Syria also hosts a Russian naval base (Russia's only naval base outside the former Soviet region) and an air base. The Tartus Naval base has played a key role in Russia's force projection from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, through Bosphorus

When the civil war broke out, in 2011, there were all kind of players in Syria. Turkey backed the FSA. Al-Qaeda opened its own branch (which is the group that captured Damascus today). The Saudis and Emiratis had their own proxies. In the south, Jordan worked with the CIA in propping up their own militias. Obama had called for regime change. On the other side, Russia made an intervention in 2015. Iran was supplying Shia militias. Hezbollah had sent thousands of troops. The Russian intervention was key in turning around the civil war. And when Trump became President, in 2017, one of the first things he did was to acknowledge that the CIA had a clandestine programme in Syria and shut it down.

Jolani, the al-Qaeda man (see his profile on my TL), set up his own government in Idlib. Assad wanted to attack Idlib, but the Russians were not on board. Maybe Putin thought he can freeze the conflict in Syria through an entente with Erdogan. Jolani rebranded himself, with the same bunch takfiri jihadists, and built his own state within the state, with full backing of Turkey. The currency in Idlib is Turkish lira. Turkey supplied electricity for Idlib, and did other trade. And when the geopolitical circumstances favoured him, Jolani, most likely with a go-ahead from Ankara, launched his offensive. And the Syrian troops crumbled without even a fight.

The Baath party rule is over. Syrian secularism is dead. Jolani will establish an Islamic State. The US will eventually lift the terror tag from both Jolani and his HTS. He will cut off ties with Iran, and both Iran and Hezbollah would be further weakened. It is to be seen whether Jolani would ask the Russians to shut the bases and leave--and if so, this would be a massive setback for Russia's West Asia plans as well. The jihadist capture of Damascus is perhaps the most consequential event in West Asia since the Iraq war of 2003. You will feel the geopolitical tremors for years, if not decades.
