Friends and colleagues in academia: Please refer keyword relevant literature from early career scholars while reviewing papers instead of harping the usual privileged, well-networked scholars. You are nipping academic careers in the bud & top journals are the biggest culprits.
“When you understand that under capitalism a forest has no value until it's cut down, you begin to understand the root of our ecological crises.” Adam Idek Hasti on fb
The following day we came back hoping for sun.
But it was even more overcast.
By now it had been cloudy for so long that the plant's storage was effectively depleted. It wasn't contributing to the grid at all. Well, a teeeny bit from the PV bit.
But near enough zero
The capitalist world economy has never been epitomised by skyscrapers in Manhattan or London, but by coltan mines in the DRC and bombed-out refugee camps in Gaza—places where people are exploited and dispossessed in order to maintain regimes of accumulation and imperial hegemony.
❄️WINTER IS COMING❄️
Snow never fails to show the ridiculous division of our public spaces. Let's use its potential to change that!

#COP28#ClimateChange is about consumption of very richest people in our global society.
50% of global emissions are emitted by just 10% of the population.
90% of global emissions by 50% of the population.
We need climate justice to save our planet. The rich need to step up
Urbanization is not a natural phenomenon. It's largely the result of the starving & plundering of the countryside - of resources, of livelihoods, of cultural exchange & impact, of dignity - often forcing people to uproot.
It's a political process & site of contestation.
Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority.
And Europe should lead the way, building a new global AI framework built on three pillars: guardrails, governance and guiding innovation ↓
To the extent that AI will be baked into every sort of information flow, then the global governance of AI means the global governance of every sort of information flow.
I don't know if this will be possible, given the speed and liquidity of open source AI development, but if it is, then this is a tidy example of something I have been arguing for some time: Geotechnologies will precede and determine the formation of the geopolitics required to orient them.
Changes in governance will come about through the implementations of technologies that require those changes. The same will be true of planetary climate governance, once hemispherical decarbonization technologies really kick in.
The fixation on "The Political" preceding governance, and governance preceding technology in the supply chain theory of change was, is, and forever will be wrong.
In 2018 I wrote a review paper in Nature on the impact of climate change on tropical forests (https://t.co/Jiu35OlPE7, subscription-free https://t.co/6YUd24ctDw)
I said that tropical forests were once a carbon sink, reducing climate change, but would soon be a carbon source 1/5
Net-zero CO₂ by 2050 is possible if:
-8,500 coal plants stop burning coal.
-we stop heating homes.
-we stop driving the 1.4 billion cars in the world.
-planes stop flying 100,000 times a day.
-we stop eating tens of billions of animals per year.
-we stop shipping stuff.
"Existe algum movimento na China análogo ao que é o MST?"
"Não, porque em 1949 eles fizeram a Reforma Agrária. Vocês que querem derrotar o MST, a fórmula é simples. Façam a Reforma Agrária que no dia seguinte desaparece o MST".
