No mom in labor should have to drive 100 miles to find a hospital that can safely deliver her baby.

Yet that's the reality in too many rural communities. Since 2011, more than 260 hospitals have stopped delivering babies, and 1 in 4 rural obstetric units have closed.

The bipartisan Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act (S. 380)—led by @SenatorHassan, @SenatorCollins, @SenKatieBritt, and @SenTinaSmith—will help rural hospitals prepare for obstetric emergencies with training, equipment, and telehealth support.

The Senate HELP Committee votes this week.

This Mother's Day, Olivia Walton joined NBC’s @MeetThePress to launch #HealthyMomsHealthyBabiesAmerica, a national campaign to put a spotlight on cutting maternal mortality in the United States in half within five years. Arkansas Governor @SarahHuckabee Sanders and Maryland Governor @GovWesMoore joined the Common Ground segment with @kwelkernbc, showing bipartisan support for improving health outcomes for moms and babies.

State-level action is critical to this effort. Now is the moment to act.

This week, we released Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies America – a Call to Action to improve maternal health. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world, and it has more than doubled since the 1980s. Yet 84% of maternal deaths are preventable.

Our goal: cut U.S. maternal mortality in half over the next five years by:
• Improving prenatal care
• Strengthening postpartum care
• Making maternal health good business
