Forest Kingfishers are native to Australia and often nest in arboreal termite nests, I love the range of blues they have! https://t.co/7eaAnhe7Ie #bird#kingfisher#birdart#pencilart
@BobFromAccounts Cycling took off (especially when Australians started to impact the TdF ). But everyone gave up reading the letters column because they were full of whiney losers from the “I don’t want hat hair” crowd who had moved on from whinging about seat belts. 😉
An intense and prolonged #heatwave will grip southeastern Australia this week, with temperatures forecast to approach 50°C in parts of four states. 🌡️

#Breaking: #Victoria just set a new maximum temperature record after #Walpeup reached 48.9°C shortly after 3:30pm AEDT. 🌡️ This beat the state's previous record of 48.8°C from #Hopetoun on February 7, 2009. Temperatures could possibly continue to rise.
@Phil88738126@Furq266400 @brianofipswich @ChrisGPackham Not always. Climate change as a result of CO2 buildup from volcanic eruptions has led to past mass extinctions of life on earth. Our small mammal ancestor only survived the last mass extinction by living underground.
A lot of folks asked why I thought this January's record global temperatures were so unexpected.
I think this graph shows it pretty clearly: pretty much every other January with La Nina conditions has been cooler than the surrounding years.
@AuDemocracy @climatecouncil The Morrison government spent years & offered money to get someone to build a new coal plant. Nobody was interested because they lose money & …
@GlenneDrover@nicknet100 😱 Use it or lose it.
What we need is a smart plug with a cloud app that is solar aware - i.e. can be programmed to switch on when estimated solar output in your postcode reaches a threshhold.
@ProvenReserves@engwithrosie No one is proposing running the grid on wind, solar & batteries alone. And grids with a lot of renewables no longer have “baseload” (aka a minimum base level of demand - see residual below) so nuclear becomes fairly useless unless you curtail everyone’s rooftop solar.
@jasonandrade@DavidOsmond8@gnievchenko I hope you are right. In the meantime, I expect people (like me) will focus on using their solar output directly, charging EVs, running heat pumps etc.
We need tech to make that easier. e.g. $20 smart plugs that know when the sun is out in your postcode. 🤷🏻♂️
