The #United States must think carefully before normalizing relations with Eritrea’s #dictatorship under Isaias Afwerki.

For more than 30 years, Eritreans have lived without elections, a free press, an independent judiciary, or basic political freedoms. Thousands of citizens, journalists, religious believers, and political prisoners have disappeared into prisons without trial. The regime’s indefinite national service system has been widely condemned as a form of forced labor.

Eritrea has also spent decades fueling instability and conflict across the Horn of Africa, while more than 1500000 Eritreans have fled the country in search of freedom and safety.

#Normalizing ties with one of the world’s most repressive regimes without meaningful reforms, accountability, and respect for human rights would not be smart diplomacy — it would #legitimize authoritarianism and betray the Eritrean people.

The international community should stand with the people of Eritrea, not reward the system that has oppressed them for generations.

Why do Eritrean football players keep disappearing during international tournaments?

Recently, 7 professional players chose not to return home after a competition in South Africa. This is not an isolated incident—around 119 Eritrean athletes have reportedly done the same over the years. Their decisions are not random; they reflect deeper structural realities.

Many Eritrean citizens face indefinite national service, often extending for years without a clear end. During this time, salaries are minimal or nonexistent, and personal development opportunities are severely limited. For young athletes, this means their careers, education, and futures are effectively put on hold.

Eritrea is frequently described as one of the most restrictive political environments in the world. Reports highlight:
• Indefinite military service
• Limited freedom of expression and no independent media
• Detention of political prisoners without due process
• Severe restrictions on internet access and global engagement

The country has been described as an “open prison,” with hundreds of detention facilities and tightly controlled movement of citizens. Instead of accessible higher education, military training structures dominate much of national life.

These conditions have contributed to the flight of an estimated 1.5 million Eritreans—many of them young people seeking dignity, safety, and opportunity.

So when athletes leave during international matches, it is not simply “defection.” It is a reflection of a broader reality: a generation searching for a future they cannot find at home.

Their stories deserve to be understood, not dismissed.

Etter en vurdering basert på #Säpos #sikkerhetsfaglige uttalelse har Myndigheten for støtte til tros- og livssynssamfunn avslått statsstøtte til den eritreisk-ortodokse Tewahedo-kirken. Begrunnelsen er #risiko for #utenlandsk statlig påvirkning, transnasjonal undertrykking og #brudd på demokratiske prinsipper – til tross for at kirken oppfylte de formelle kravene til medlemskap og aktivitet.

Det samme #problemet finnes i Norge. Flere #organisasjoner og #kirker i den eritreiske diasporaen styres og kontrolleres gjennom #ambassader og #konsulater, og fungerer i praksis som #forlengede armer av det eritreiske diktatoriske regimet, ikke som uavhengige sivilsamfunnsaktører.

#Norge bør følge Sveriges eksempel og stanse offentlig støtte til #regimekontrollerte organisasjoner. Offentlige midler må aldri bidra til #autoritær innflytelse, #press mot diasporaen eller undergraving av demokratiske verdier. Demokrati, åpenhet og menneskerettigheter må være et absolutt minstekrav for statsstøtte.

Asylum or Abuse? The Case of Amanuel Gebrebrhan “Wedi Taba” 🇳🇴

1/ One of the leading propagandists for Eritrea’s dictatorship—Amanuel Gebrebrhan, also known as Wedi Taba—is currently residing in Norway as an asylum beneficiary.

But is he upholding asylum principles—or violating them?

2/ Amanuel was granted asylum in Norway in 2010 as a quota refugee (kvoteflyktning). Yet today, he actively promotes the same authoritarian regime he supposedly fled from.

Dette er et avgjørende bevis:

Det er viktig å forstå hvordan regimet i Eritrea organiserer sine strukturer også utenfor landet. I 2022 ble en ny paraply etablert som samlet flere eksisterende diaspora-organisasjoner, inkludert #Mekhete, #Walta, #Eri-Blood og #Hade Libi Biddiho.

Regimet opererer tradisjonelt med tre militære fronter i Eritrea:
• #Østlig militærfront
• #Vestlig militærfront
• #Sentralt militærfront

I tillegg omtales en #fjerdefront i vestlige land. Denne fronten har som formål å:
• Støtte og beskytte diktaturet
• Organisere innsamling av penger til regimet
• Beskytte regimets arrangementer og festivaler i utlandet
• Spre propaganda, indoktrinere og mobilisere støttespillere
• Skremme, true, trakassere og undertrykke regimekritikere – også gjennom overvåkning

This meeting represents more than symbolism. It reflects growing global recognition that the Eritrean people have endured decades of repression, forced militarization, silenced voices, and the absence of constitutional rule. The courage of Eritreans who continue to advocate peacefully for democratic change—despite severe risks—deserves principled international engagement and moral clarity.

Supporting democratic movements is not an act of interference; it is a commitment to universal values: human rights, rule of law, accountability, and the right of a people to determine their own future. Eritrea’s long-standing political crisis has not only harmed its citizens but has also contributed to regional instability in the Horn of Africa.

Constructive international solidarity sends a clear message: lasting peace and stability cannot be achieved through repression, fear, or indefinite rule without consent. Sustainable solutions must come through inclusive dialogue, respect for fundamental freedoms, and the restoration of constitutional governance.

The voices calling for change in Eritrea are not voices of division—they are voices of hope. Hope for a nation where young people are not forced to flee, where families are reunited, where institutions serve the people, and where leadership is accountable.
