#Eritrea fares worst in the world in plastic waste management, shows Plastic Overshoot Day report

A recent report highlights the alarming contribution of 81 countries, including 44 from #Africa and #India, to plastic pollution due to poor waste management practices. In Eritrea, 97% of plastic waste is mismanaged, making it the worst performer globally. Meanwhile, India has shown improvement but still struggles with 68.62% of plastic waste mismanagement.

The global plastic waste generation is projected to increase, with nearly 69.5 million tonnes expected to be mismanaged in 2024. Despite slight improvements, the crisis persists, prompting urgent action. The report emphasizes the need for systemic overhaul and investment in waste management infrastructure.

As countries prepare for the United Nations Plastic Treaty negotiations, the report urges policymakers to prioritize ratification and strict implementation of global rules.
