One thing I've come to appreciate more as I've gotten older is the important role some of these glamorous female celebrities played in normalizing acceptance of gay people by modelling it themselves. It's easy to dismiss the respect gay men often give to women like Dolly Parton, or Elizabeth Taylor, or Princess Di or whoever as something sort of trite and tacky, and sometimes it is. But at its best, it's also rooted in a history of being able to identify allies at a time when being one was a genuinely brave act for a public figure reliant on the good graces of the conservative middle classes.
