See, this is the luckiest time to be born. In fact, not just childhood the level of things we got to experience growing up, whether it was basketball, music, football or technology, was different.
This generation grew up watching Bolt, Ronaldo, Messi, Nadal, Federer, Hamilton, Djokovic, LeBron and Kobe at or around their absolute peak. Then watched the upcoming goats 🐐 like they’re our younger ones. We didn’t just watch great athletes, we watched entire eras being created in real time. You could literally pick a sport and find someone who was redefining what human beings thought was possible.
Then look at music. We grew up when CDs, MP3s, radio, MTV, music videos and physical albums were still a thing, but we also witnessed the transition into YouTube, streaming and social media. We went from downloading songs on our phones and sharing music through Bluetooth to having virtually every song ever made available instantly with streaming platforms.
And that is what makes the 1992–2003 window so special.
We were basically the bridge between two completely different worlds.
We knew what it was like to play outside until your parents started looking for you. We knew cartoons, DVDs, VHS, CRT televisions, PlayStation 1, PS2, Nintendo, FIFA/PES, Nokia phones, Snake, ringtone downloads, Bluetooth and going to a cyber cafe just to use the internet. We met everything even coins.
Then suddenly, the internet became normal. Google became normal. YouTube came. Facebook came. Smartphones came. Instagram, WhatsApp and eventually TikTok changed how the world communicated. We met sending letters, late night calls.
We had a childhood before everything became digital, but we became adults in a completely digital world.
We remember when you had to wait for a song to come on the radio. We also became the generation that could discover an artist on YouTube. We watched football highlights on television, then moved to watching them on YouTube and eventually social media. We went from handwritten notes and physical books to Google, smartphones and AI.
Even football itself was crazy. We witnessed the final years of Ronaldinho, the rise of Messi and Ronaldo, the dominance of Barcelona and Madrid, the evolution of the Premier League, Neymar, Iniesta, Xavi, Modric, Salah, the greatest rivalry between two players we may ever see and we were young enough to actually enjoy all of it as it happened.
You can think of any sport and it’s almost the same.
And the beauty of it is that we weren’t completely consumed by technology yet.
You could spend 5 hours outside with your friends, come home, watch a football match, play PlayStation, listen to music from a CD or MP3, then maybe go online for the first time that day.
That balance probably won’t exist in the same way again.
We didn’t just grow up during a great period.
We grew up watching the world change from analogue to digital in real time.
That is what makes our childhood so rare. Like so so Rare.
This is why we must prepare deliberately for old age.
Don’t prepare only financially; prepare socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Go into your later years with a reliable cash flow. Build investments, a business, pension or assets that can continue to provide income when you can no longer work as hard.
Build and maintain relationships. Join a community, church, mosque, social group, old student association, professional association or neighbourhood community. Don’t wait until old age to start looking for companionship.
Learn to enjoy your own company too. Develop hobbies and skills like painting, gardening, music, writing, photography or volunteering—things that can keep your mind active and give you purpose.
Learn to cook, clean, do your laundry and manage your own affairs. Stay physically active and take your health seriously.
And most importantly, invest in people. Nurture your spouse, children, family and genuine friendships while you still have the opportunity.
Money can make old age comfortable, but meaningful relationships, purpose and community can make it worth living.
Prepare for old age while you are still young enough to do something about it.
Good morning and happy Sunday.
