The AU’s 2025 Theme of the Year marks another significant milestone in the conscious institutionalization of reparatory justice and racial healing in Africa.

This initiative aims to develop a Common African Position on Reparations, establish an African Reparatory Programme of Action, and strengthen collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the global African diaspora through a Joint Mechanism on Reparations.

𝐖𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐯𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝? Well, the selection process of the candidates is the responsibility of Member States and their respective African Union Regions.

For the 2025 elections, the 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 is eligible to submit candidates for the position of the 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐔 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧. Member States within the region independently nominated individuals from their countries. The region, guided by their own procedures for nominating candidates, then submitted the names of four candidates who will contest for the position of the Chairperson of the AU Commission.

The 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 will participate in the upcoming 𝐌𝐣𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞, where they will address African citizens as they present their visions and ideas on the implementation of Africa’s transformative Agenda 2063.

In February 2025, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government will elect and appoint the Chairperson. The elections are conducted by 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐭, meaning that the votes are cast privately, ensuring confidentiality and preventing any undue influence or pressure on the Member States voting during the election process.
