A religious mystic in filthy rags once looked at a wealthy sheikh like he'd sold his soul to money. The sheikh's answer flipped everything the mystic
believed about who's actually pious.

The sheikh, Imam Shadhili, called him over and said it plainly:

"My clothes tell people I need nothing from them or their money. Yours tell them 'I'm poor and pious, give me charity and admire my holiness.'"

The mystic had no money. And he never stopped thinking about it. He judged wealthy men. He wore poverty like a resume.

His entire identity was built on rejecting dunya - which means dunya owned him completely.

Dunya in the hand is fine. Dunya in the heart is the disease, whether you have money or you're proud you don't.

A lot of Muslims wear their poverty exactly like that mystic wore his rags. As I'm building a product meant to build Muslim wealth, I can't help but see it.

True detachment to wealth is earning it so you won't be occupied by it.

Hanbali Affirmations That Ashʿarīs Are from Ahl al-Sunnah

1. Al-Saffārīnī al-Ḥanbalī: The Three Schools of Ahl al-Sunnah

Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah are three groups: the Atharīs, whose imam is Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (may Allah be pleased with him); the Ashʿarīs, whose imam is Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī (may Allah have mercy on him); and the Māturīdīs, whose imam is Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī. As for the sects of misguidance, they are exceedingly numerous. Now is the time to begin the intended discussion, and success is by Allah alone.

2. Ibn al-Qaddūmī al-Ḥanbalī: The Atharīs, Ashʿarīs, and Māturīdīs Are One Group

I say: There is no contradiction, because the People of Hadith, the Ashʿarīs, and the Māturīdīs are one single group. They agree on the foundations of the religion: the oneness of Allah, divine decree regarding good and evil, the conditions of prophethood and messengership, loyalty toward all of the Companions, and other similar principles, such as denying the obligation upon Allah to do what is best (al-ṣalāḥ wa al-aṣlaḥ), affirming acquisition (kasb), affirming intercession (shafāʿah), and affirming that sinful monotheists will eventually leave the Fire.

Al-Shattī al-Ḥanbalī: The Saved Sect Is One Despite Three Theological Schools

I found written in the margin of manuscript (J), in the handwriting of the eminent scholar Shaykh ʿAbdullāh Khalaf al-Duḥayyān (may Allah have mercy on him):

Benefit: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in one of his notes:

“He mentioned the beliefs of the Saved Sect and said: They are the Ashʿarīs, the Māturīdīs, and the People of Hadith. Some scholars said: The Saved Sect is the People of Hadith, meaning the Atharīs, the Ashʿarīs, and the Māturīdīs.

If you object that the term ‘People of Hadith’ appears to exclude the others, based on the Prophet’s ﷺ statement, ‘My Ummah will split into more than seventy-three sects; all of them will be in the Fire except one, namely that which is upon what I and my Companions are upon,’ then the answer is that these three groups are in reality one single sect. They are all People of Hadith, because the Ashʿarīs and the Māturīdīs neither rejected the hadiths nor neglected them; rather, they either consigned their meanings (tafwīḍ) or interpreted them (taʾwīl). Thus, each of them belongs to the People of Hadith.

Accordingly, the three are one sect because they follow the transmitted reports and adhere to the prophetic narrations. This is unlike the remaining sects, who made reason the ultimate judge and opposed the transmitted texts. They are the people of innovation, misguidance, opposition, and ignorance. And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.”
