@LuatuaTj @mrkempnz How impactful?! I have overcome some really big social barriers by looking at people as there other self... Mum, sister, wife, daughter... It helps me keep a true perspective of people. They aren't just a teacher, boss or peer. How much burden is lifted then?#whatisschool
@deem_ellen@ShiftParadigm A2: I often say something that help make them feel normal. Try and relate if appropriate. Give them space to process it. Tell them that I feel like they have a lot on their mind and give them a big white sheet of paper/crayons to draw out feelings. #WhatIsSchool
@PaulJHaasEdu A4: A good example comes to mind. A young girls house had burnt down the night before. When we found out, the lesson changed to allowing her the space to share about it (given the choice). Instantly, the other students had compassion. They wrote about fire safety. #WhatIsSchool
@tikaee A3: I would have "fillers" that I can use as a go to when the tempo changes aka pivoting. A quick game, exercises, story or activity so that I can readjust to the new plan. Life is not a straight forward task so expect the unexpected#whatisschool
@ponderingDan A3: Perhaps setting family tasks. Getting the family involved. I imagine a young boy discovering what happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar. And then sharing that discovery with his siblings. Or doing it with his family and predicting, questioning, trying.#PrimarySTEMchat
@EmpowerDigiTech @ponderingDan A4: I think there are so many that can be done at home. Part of the fun would be googling a list of items needed and then exploring the house for the items. Especially in the garage. Mixing water and food colouring and learning about mixing colours is easy #PrimarySTEMchat
@EmpowerDigiTech A5: Encourage them to have an outdoor activity where the child is taught a new skill and gets to showcase the skill. eg. dribbling a basketball. Count how many bounces, research world record, history of basketball, etc The options are endless #PrimarySTEMchat
@ponderingDan Kiaora, My name is Renee Verhulst and I am in my first year of A Bachelor of Education at Laidlaw, Auckland and I work as a Teacher Aide at Glendene School.
@LisaGrayson2803@CollisEmilie@Amyy_yymA @McKinnonAl I hope to just get to know the children over time. Find out about them. What they like. What lights up their face! And form some of my lessons around that. e.g Bob like trucks and bulldozers so I would have a math lesson with these two things. Light up his face!#CScEdchatNZ
@McKinnonAl A5: We have to reflect on what they were taught, who taught them and how and have they taught their kids. Technology has changed how some people parent or not. Some children are developing accents from the programs they are watching. I hear Peppa Pig is influential #CSCEDchatNZ
@CollisEmilie@Amyy_yymA @McKinnonAl I believe we strive to be relational... try and relate to each child. Find something in common and run with it. Being the smartest, fastest or best wont matter if they cant talk to their neighbor or find common ground with their peers. #CScEDchatNZ
@Amyy_yymA @McKinnonAl I agree. If I could change the world I would. One child at a time. I do believe that home influence often trumps the loving attempts of the teacher. All we can do at times is lead by example. #CSCEDchatNZ
@McKinnonAl A2: I think it is idealistic. So many children are influenced by Family, peers, and the world. Some children need structure, boundaries and stability. And we are all so different. We cant squeeze them into a box. There is good in everyone... How do we tap into that?#CSCEDchatNZ
@McKinnonAl Kiaora. I am Renee Verhulst. First year student at Laidlaw. Studying the Bachelor of Education. I also work at Glendene school as a teacher aide.
@McKinnonAl I am trying to imagine how I will manage each child. I view them as Gods children but am also aware that some have been influenced and shaped by the world. Add all the complex personalities and my ego. I rely on my peers to guide me through any difficulties. #CScEdchatNZ
@mrkempnz A3: I endeavor to identify their strengths & do my best to incorporate learning styles to suit. From personal experience, I valued the teacher more, listened & engaged when I was celebrated, included & noticed. Lots of missed opportunities #whatisschool
@mrkempnz A1: I am human and quick to defend my reasons for doing something, but recently I have been practicing the art of listening and processing through both positive or negative and found a voice to agree, disagree and thank whoever gives the feedback. #whatisschool
@mrkempnz A4: This depends on age... I would teach older children that feedback is often when we might get offended because our ideas (we believe) are awesome. I would try and guide them through hearing it, processing it and then using it (or not).

@mrkempnz This is easy... ask! Ask the children, colleagues, parents and friends. What is working and what is not. Try for myself. Research is very helpful too. What is popular will be evident. Excited to learn from the children too. I often ask my own for help.
