🧬🦠 What connects a Western diet, the gut microbiome and colorectal cancer?

New #GUTPodcast with Dr Soeren Ocvirk discusses new research by Osswald et al. in Gut: “Secondary bile acid production by gut bacteria promotes Western diet-associated colorectal cancer.”

The study provides experimental evidence that secondary bile acids—particularly deoxycholic acid (DCA)—produced by 7α-dehydroxylating gut bacteria can promote colorectal tumour development in the context of a Western diet.

Using a combination of a porcine CRC model, multi-omics, gnotobiotic mouse models and human colon organoids, the researchers show that specific bile-acid-producing bacteria can increase DCA production, epithelial proliferation and tumour burden.

Importantly, manipulating this pathway reduced tumour-promoting effects, pointing towards the gut microbiome–bile acid axis as a potential target for prevention.

For clinicians and scientists, this is an important step from correlation towards causality.

For everyone else: it adds another piece to the puzzle of how what we eat, our gut microbes and the chemistry they produce may interact in colorectal cancer risk.

🧬 Catestatin decreases duodenal hypermotility to improve glucose homeostasis in diabetic male mice

New #GUTScience journal research by Abot et al. explores an intriguing link between the movement of the gut and blood sugar control.

In diabetic mice, the researchers found that catestatin reduced excessive movement of the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) and improved glucose tolerance. Longer-term treatment was also associated with less weight gain and lower levels of fat in the liver.

Why does this matter for clinicians and patients? 🩺

The gut does much more than digest food. How quickly food moves through the intestine can influence metabolism and blood glucose levels. Understanding these connections could eventually reveal new ways to treat metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

This is early, preclinical research in mice, so further studies are needed to find out whether these effects could translate into new treatments for people.

This study explores low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a non-invasive approach to reducing visceral pain in patients with IBS with diarrhoea. By implicating inhibition of the medial prefrontal cortex in the reduction of visceral pain, the findings provide further evidence that altered brain–gut signalling is central to IBS and suggest a potential new avenue for neuromodulatory treatment.
The work adds to the growing recognition that treating disorders of gut–brain interaction may require approaches that target both the gastrointestinal tract and the nervous system.
