@ckrovee In case we don't get to it in class, can you clarify what kind of obligations the central cast of Emma had to the Bates? Emma takes them food, they're invited to gatherings, but their poverty is remarked on often. In a world of such wealth, are they supported otherwise?

@hoonlee7922 Is it because the person who is in trouble is Harriet? Aside from being a favorite of Emma's, does it matter if something bad happens to her? She doesn't have anyone to speak for or avenge her -- she's a girl of unknown parentage.

@anita_dubroc What do you mean? Tai is Harriet, Dion is a hybrid Mrs. Weston (but so is also the teacher), Mrs. Elton is Amber, Josh is Knightly, Elton is Elton, Cher is Emma, Christen is Frank, Travis is the Farmer. I don't think there's really a Bates or a Jane.

@hoonlee7922 He also had a lot to lose, if I understood it correctly. He could be disinherited for marry Jane. There's definitely some self-interest going on. On the Austen rake scale, I rate him low but he's definitely duplicitous.

@sophiepkennedy I was actually surprised at how threatening I felt Elton was in the carriage, mostly because Emma notes he's drunk (or thinks he is). And that's why I started thinking about adaptations of the scene --they either highlight a juvenile rage or straight up douchebaggery. #7922Austen

Find it interesting that the carriage scene in 2 film versions have Elton jumping out immediately & Cher is kicked out on the side of the road, but they just arrive at his house in the book. Wonder about this slight tweak. Do modern aud worry 4 Emma's safety?

I'm very curious about this hypochondriac father. Is this a variation on Mrs. Bennett's nerves? He still has an attentive daughter to care for him in a way that Mrs. B doesn't. And I *really* want us to talk about Austen's mothers still.
