@sophiepkennedy @hoonlee7922 but again, JA leaves readers in the dark (like emma's in the dark about her own desires) & to speculate (the way everyone in the book speculates about everyone else). it's no dashwood situation though: mrs d & her daughters have £500/yr between them, emma has £1500/yr on her own

@sophiepkennedy @hoonlee7922 i need to think more about that, but worth keeping in mind the difference between hartfield (a gentlemen's house w/attached farm, not a 'great estate') and donwell. knightley's got the highest social status in highbury & donwell is the symbol of that.

@hoonlee7922 it's a house with a little property, not an estate, so the significance of transmission is less. emma's inheritance of £30k means (living off the interest) roughly £1500 a year, so she's got it made
