In the last 48 hours, the Israeli government has killed at least 21 Palestinians in Gaza, including an airstrike that killed a 1-½ year old boy and injured most of his family members. More than 200 Palestinians have now died of hunger, including at least 100 children, amid a worsening famine. The only fully functional hospital in South Gaza, Nasser, has been flooded with raw sewage water following more Israeli airstrikes and has been unable to be repaired due to Israeli soldiers blocking the sewer lines. The scale of devastation in Palestine is unimaginable and has only been possible due to the two parties of U.S. imperialism, the Democrats and Republicans, greenlighting tens of billions of dollars for this genocide.

Kshama’s opponent, warmongering Democrat Adam Smith, is a general among the warhawks. Smith has voted repeatedly to fund the genocide in Gaza and to ban funds from the United Nations' food distribution in Gaza, directly contributing to the mass starvation.

As Gaza starves thanks to his actions, this week, Smith hosted a "Taste of the 9th" fundraiser, where Smith told his invitees to "come hungry."

Kshama and dozens of other Workers Strike Back members and antiwar activists protested outside the fundraiser. We banged on pots and pans and chanted: "Adam Smith, you can't hide, you are funding genocide!"

@wrkrsstrikeback & Kshama Sawant at our "Taste for Genocide" protest, calling out this corrupt Democratic Party politician who voted TWICE for bills that cut UN food aid to Gaza. Adam Smith is responsible for the mass starvation in Gaza, yet he told invitees to "come hungry" to his fundraiser to get reelected so he can keep helping his biggest donors (Palantir, Lockheed, AIPAC, General Atomics...) profit off the genocide.

Replacing him with @cmkshama would rattle the entire establishment and their rotten system - and be a massive opportunity to take a sledgehammer to the genocide-for-profit machine WHILE having a real chance at winning historic victories for the working class.

The road to Trump's brutal attacks on immigrants was paved by Democratic Party politicians like warmongering corporate Congressmember Adam Smith.

In 2002, Adam Smith voted to create ICE as part of his support for Republican President George W. Bush’s Homeland Security Act and the bipartisan assault on immigrants.

In 2001, Smith voted for Bush’s Patriot Act, which unleashed a new wave of mass surveillance and attacks on peaceful protest movements.

Kshama Sawant has proven time and again that Jacobin's strategy is incorrect. She won 4 elections in Seattle as an independent socialist - then went on to win historic victory after historic victory for the working class, including the Amazon Tax, which is raising hundreds of millions of dollars per year for affordable housing, and the $15 min wage (now $20.76 because she tied it to inflation) which ignited the fight for $15 across the country.

@cmkshama won these victories and many more by FIGHTING the Democratic Party, not joining them.

Now she's running for U.S. Congress against pro-genocide, warmongering Democrat Adam Smith who - despite being a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus - has voted repeatedly to fund the genocide and to ban funds from the United Nations food distribution in Gaza, directly contributing to the mass starvation. And of course he has because his biggest donor last year was AIPAC and he gets hundreds of thousands of dollars from genocide profiteers like Palantir, Lockheed, General Atomics, Amazon, Microsoft and many others. One of the historic victories working people and I won through my socialist office on the Seattle City Council was the ban on caste-based discrimination, the world's first ever outside South Asia.

We won it because we built a fighting movement, something political leaders today are rarely willing to do. It was that fighting strategy that defeated the opposition from the Democratic Party politicians and the Hindu right wing.

It's absolutely stunning, though not surprising, that @jacobin is regurgitating this op-ed from 2020.

The idea that independent working-class campaigns can never succeed was garbage five years ago, and it's toxic waste today. My organization, Revolutionary Workers, Seattle's working people, rank-and-file union members, and I are living proof of this. We won four elections and unparalleled working-class victories with me as an independent socialist — no thanks to most of the labor and NGO leaders, and certainly no thanks to the Democratic Party.

The Democratic Party has always been a party of the capitalists. Today, it has also become a party of genocide, with its lowest approval rating in 35 years.

Trump and the Republicans are also deeply unpopular.

Working people are furious and fired up to fight against both the genocidal anti-worker parties of the billionaires.

For a supposedly socialist publication to tweet this out at such a time is a criminal abdication of responsibility.

The op-ed's author, Dustin Guastella, is a leader of the Teamsters union. The Teamster President Sean O'Brien not only spoke at the Republican National Convention, kissing up to Donald Trump and the equally horrifically anti-worker and Zionist Senator Josh Hawley. The union leadership is also currently pouring tens of thousands of dollars into right-wing Republican candidates.

Jacobin is promoting a five-year-old article by a labor leader who is currently hugging openly anti-worker right-wing politicians.

The working class needs to dispense with all the various snakeoil salesmen and build class-struggle campaigns and the antiwar movement independent of both Democrats and Republicans.

Seattle’s Democratic Mayor @bruceharrell is trying to claim credit for a historic $15 victory he OPPOSED.

Democrats will fight you tooth and nail, then try to claim credit when you wrench victory from their hands.

Democratic Party politicians and NGO leaders have told many stunning lies in their countless attempts to take credit for the historic victories working people and my socialist City Council office won. Victories that they first viciously opposed - until they couldn't, in the face of the strength of our movements.

But one of the most breathtaking lies I've seen to date is Bruce Harrell, the corporate Democratic Mayor of Seattle, trying to claim credit for our highest-in-the-nation minimum wage victory.

Harrell strenuously opposed the minimum wage increase when he was on the City Council. Even until the very last moment, when everyone knew the legislation was going to win, Harrell was faithfully fighting hard on behalf of the bosses to try and introduce as many loopholes as possible into the bill. I'll never forget how doggedly he and his fellow Democrats shilled for the billionaires and multimillionaires against the poorest workers in our city.

I'm proud to say that Seattle's working people, my fellow socialists, and I defeated him and his cronies on most of their attempts. The 15 NOW movement that I launched in Seattle spread throughout the nation, raising the wages of millions of working people.

Bernie is doing what he's always done: Funneling the momentum from his events back into the Democratic Party. His recent partnering with Run for Something during his Fighting Oligarchy tour is but another disgusting example of his unwavering fealty to the billionaire-owned Democrats.

RFS was co-founded in 2017 by Amanda Litman, former comms staffer for Barack Obama in 2012, and for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Their mission is to "recruit and support young, diverse progressives to run for down-ballot races in order to build sustainable power for Democrats in all 50 states."

From Executive Director Joanna Silva Waki's bio: "One of her stand-out achievements was to manage Vote Hope 2008, the largest independent expenditure in support of Barack Obama for President."

In 2024 Run for Something's top donors included Alphabet Inc, Madison Wells Media (owned by Hyatt Hotel chain heiress & billionaire Gigi Pritzker), Uber, private investment firm Leith Ventures (owned by former oil & gas company CEO and multimillionaire Merle Chambers), Stanford University, and Stripe Inc, (valued at $91 billion), whose co-founder & CEO Patrick Collison was criticized for visiting Israel and posting an image with the Israeli flag in Nov 2024 amid the Gaza genocide in which tens of thousands of Palestinians had been killed up to that point.

Bernie is as entrenched and faithful a Democratic Party operative as they come.
