@ZTzanis I would promote newer journalistic organizations that have alternative business models to traditional media, such as the Texas Tribune. I would explain what makes them different, specifically the non-profit model that they use to ensure bias is excluded from all their coverage.
@SophiaWilson77 I think AI has the possibility to make selective exposure much worse. As AI develops, it is increasingly more likely that it could empower those who just want to farm online engagement. One way they might do this is by using AI to create biased stories at an unfathomable rate.
@angelicaruser After taking this class, I distrust most news organizations much more. However, I won't let this change which news I engage in. Rather than checking out, I will be more interrogative of the articles I read and check their sources and processes to ensure their information is good.
@_masonrouser Making it a goal to specifically seek out and hire those with certain beliefs is always a bad idea. The only factor that should go into hiring a journalist is how good of a reporter they are. Actively seeking members of an ideology would only increase the partisan divide in news.
Do you think that journalists taking an "activist" stance as Prof. Johnson stated in his lecture involves too much bias, or is it a necessary step to combat misinformation and protect democracy? #J349
What type of coverage do you think the media should use in the 2024 election to get through to Trump supporters who believe in conspiracies and false facts? Is it pro-democracy coverage, or something else? #J349
@smackbunnybaby One of the hidden dangers of social media algorithms is the perpetuation of misinformation. Stories that get the most engagement get pushed through the algorithm, regardless of their factuality. Misinformation is able to thrive on social platforms where engagement drives success.
@RyanCerna2 My biggest news use motivation is connections. I like to be knowledgeable about recent news topics so that I can talk to others about them. I spend a lot of time with news-savvy individuals, so I like to be able to keep up.
