The report also focuses more on other greenhouse gases like methane, which can impact the climate more than eighty times more than carbon dioxide. Leaking pipelines and fugitive emissions from gassy coal mines are major sources of methane.

Today's report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change confirms previous findings that to keep 1.5 degrees in reach, we must halve global emissions this decade. For wealthier countries like Australia, that means a three-quarters reduction by 2030

In Australia, we know these impacts deeply. In the 2019-20 bushfires, 35 people tragically lost their lives to the flames. The impacts on lungs from exposure to bushfire smoke claimed 445 lives.

Climate change is a threat to health. It increases health impacts and mortality from extreme temperatures - already responsible for nearly one in ten deaths globally - as well as extreme weather events like bushfires, droughts and floods.

This year's report warns that in order to keep warming below 1.5 degrees, the greatest action needs to happen this decade, and that ever fraction of a degree matters. The decisions we make from now to 2030 will define the next several centuries or millennia.

The IPCC has been warning for years that unless we rapidly reduce emissions mostly driven by the burning of coal, oil and gas, extreme weather events and other climate impacts will become more frequent and severe, and that every year of delay makes the task harder.
