One of the problems with the Iran War is that both Trump and Iran are prone to overreaching and escalating. That's why Trump started this war. And Iran's history of overreach led it to keep the US hostages for more than a year and drag out the Iran-Iraq war. A ground invasion by either would be insane.

We have seen a major escalation between the US and Iran over the past 24 hours, but it is likely only a prelude to what appears to be coming next week.

Trump appears to have concluded that Tehran’s hard line in the negotiations stemmed from the United States not hitting Iran hard enough during the 38-day war. Seemingly indifferent to the costs for the GCC states, the global economy, inflation and the American cost of living—not to mention the risk to U.S. troops—he is gambling that a few more weeks of war will degrade Iran’s ability to close the Strait and force Tehran into a more accommodating negotiating position.

It is, at best, a perilous gamble. Tehran has grown increasingly convinced that while Trump is unconventional enough to pursue diplomacy with Iran, he lacks the discipline and strategic patience to see negotiations through.

Herein lies the paradox of Trump: his willingness to break with convention makes him open to pursuing peace with Iran—a possibility previous presidents scarcely entertained. Yet that same disregard for convention leads him to dismiss the discipline, protocols and methods that successful diplomacy requires.

President Zelenskyy just said he spoke at length with the former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov who he sacked this week and talks with him and others are ongoing. Fedorov confirmed below and said "change is inevitable." No decisions yet but something is up.

Zelenskyy also said he spoke to commander in chief Oleksandr Syrsky today. I reported @FT earlier that the president is interviewing potential candidates to replace him, in line with protesters' demands.

I am told that the president will hold more talks tomorrow.

The crisis is not over but pressure from Ukraine's civil society is having an impact and I'm told the president is following and listening.

This was the most horrifying night of the entire full-scale war. Russia has completely lost it.

People were sheltering at Lukianivska metro station, 69 meters underground, yet everyone was covered in dust, as if the ceiling was about to collapse.

Soon, there won’t be anywhere left to hide from the missiles. Only reinforced bunkers will be safe.

Some of my friends had their windows blown out.

I still have chills running down my spine, and tears in my eyes.

Palestinian human rights groups are circulating a sign-on letter in support of International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan. They claim not to be making a judgment about his alleged sexual misconduct with a subordinate employee. Instead, tracking Khan’s talking points, they claim to be concerned only about procedure.
The procedure was indeed travesty, in that the UN (OIOS) investigators produced an 150-page “he said, she said” report but only alluded to their damning factual findings. As a result, an advisory panel of judges, without any firm findings before it, found the burden of proof hadn’t been met. Of course it hadn’t been.
Fortunately, the 21- state ICC Executive Bureau examined the OIOS report – the complainant’s detailed testimony about sexual abuse over many months in many locales, and Khan’s carefully crafted denials. At least two-thirds of the Bureau members found him responsible for “serious misconduct,” suspended him, and recommended his removal from office.
The Palestinian groups now side with him nonetheless because they seem to think he’ll be tougher on Israel. In fact, he never charged Israel for the war-crime settlements and acted on Israel’s starvation strategy only after he had been accused of enabling genocide.
More to the point, any prosecution of Israeli officials (or anyone else) requires a credible prosecutor, and Khan’s credibility is shot. At least two-thirds of the Bureau’s member states found his false denials to be utterly incredible. For the sake of the court, and the effective pursuit of justice, the Palestinian groups should stop trying to defend the indefensible. The 125 ICC member states should dismiss him definitively on July 24 so a credible prosecutor can be picked to advance prosecutions including of Israeli officials.

Representatives of Wildberries reached out via my Telegram channel's chatbot, asking me to update a post about the strikes on the company's logistics center in Elektrostal and logistics hub in Kotovsk, Russia.

I decided to respond publicly.

Wildberries is no longer just an online marketplace for clothing and household goods. The platform sells weapons, body armor, drones, drone components, and fiber-optics used for drones.

All of these items are used in the war against Ukraine and help kill Ukrainians. That is why such facilities are legitimate military targets for Ukraine's Armed Forces.

I recommend that Wildberries' management publicly call on Putin to end the war. Only then will the company have a chance of preserving its business.
