This blatant lobbying attempt must have been orchestrated by @Chevron, Harry Sargeant’s companies, or both. This woman is utterly clueless about the subject matter.

Some background. China’s initial investment in Venezuela was part of PDVSA’s ‘Apertura’ process in the late 1990s, before Chávez’s rise to power. Chevron, Mobil, Conoco, and numerous European companies also returned to a country that had nationalized its oil industry in 1976. In 2001, China and Chávez signed a “strategic agreement for ever bla bla bla.” However, a few years later, Chávez reversed the terms of the Apertura deals. ExxonMobil and Conoco exited, and they sued. The Chinese were deeply disappointed that they had been treated as poorly as others despite their ‘strategic’ relationship. This marked the end of their enthusiasm for Venezuela, and things have been downhill ever since.

On the other hand, Chevron remained despite PDVSA, its counterpart, becoming a criminal enterprise. Chevron never seemed to care and has always been happy to act as an unofficial lobbyist for an incompetent revolution that transformed into a human rights-abusing and drug trafficking regime. Furthermore, to protect their highly opaque relationship with the Maduro regime, they have diligently and shamelessly undermined the struggle of the majority of the Venezuelan people for freedom and democracy. They have funded think tanks, opinion makers, and clueless talking heads to promote their false narrative. They blatantly lie, and their arguments about the Chinese taking over if they leave Venezuela are baseless. In fact, Sinopec, one of the Chinese companies with investments in Venezuela, is trying to sell them to Amos Energy Global Management, a company founded by Ali Moshiri, Chevron’s former head of Latin America, and the man most associated with the crooked entanglement between Chevron and chavismo.

As for Mr. Grenell, I will not say anything…por ahora.

Disclosure: I was a member of the Executive Board of Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) during the peak years of the Apertura process. I have no issue whatsoever with foreign companies participating in the Venezuela oil sector. I have serious issues with oil companies enabling a brutal narco dictatorship and undermining democracy.

Ya el Quiebre en la desobediencia del régimen se empezó a consumar el mismo 28 de julio cuando cada uniformado decidió desconocer órdenes del régimen y protegió sus propias actas.
Sí, estas son las actas de las Fuerzas Armadas, también. Ellos sin duda lo sienten así.
Saben que es la prueba de su propio voto a favor de libertad que ellos desean para sí mismos y para sus familias.
Hoy las actas de la Unión Cívico-militar están protegidas en Panamá hasta que la propia fuerza armada nos ayude a repatriarlas a Venezuela.

If Venezuela recovers democracy, China can have a chance to receive payment and the oil they paid upfront. Now geopolitical speaking, that's another issue, China won't like loosing its presence there

Who do you propose negotiate with whom? Elections are the cornerstone of democracy. The people of Venezuela have voted with great courage and in massive numbers. What we are now witnessing is what you and many others choose to ignore. Venezuela’s crisis is not merely political, though it profoundly affects the political sphere. The fundamental crisis is this: a group of mafiosi have captured the State, essentially kidnapping an entire society. Eight million have fled, and those who remain yearn for freedom, which necessitates dismantling the cartel. Despite facing immense odds, the cartel was decisively defeated in elections, and now the people are being gunned down and terrorized by the cartel's hitmen.

Please contradict my narrative and tell me that during your time at the NSC, you weren’t repeatedly briefed on this reality.

It’s absurd to continue perpetuating the farce that this is a political struggle solvable through a negotiation between kidnappers and hostages. Your stance is not only irresponsible but also cruel. It reflects the pervasive fear among bureaucrats, half baked diplomats, and half-ass analysts to call things by their true names and to find solutions commensurate with such monumental challenges.

As the saying goes, if you don’t like dealing with narcos, stop pontificating about Latin America.
