When entities want to create an impression in the public psyche that they’re in charge, that they’re the power that matters, one of the things they’ll strategically do is to appear to be the agenda setters.
- They’ll ensure that they’re the first to announce important things;
- that they matter in determining who becomes king, especially as they announce a name other than what the public expected and indicated by the President;
- that they’re the ones who make key endorsements, eg Speakers, again as they announce a candidate other than the expected and indicated by the President…;
- that they are the ones who endorse ministers and heads of other vital organs;
- that they can influence sacking big people;
- that they can operate above the law, courts and institutions without any consequences;
- that freedom, opportunities and loss of the two depends on how you relate with them.

With all this, the public is being manipulated and prepared to re-organise and align its hopes, expectations, plans, and behaviour accordingly.

This is a very important view-point. The General’s perspective is right. When you marry into a family, you become a son in that family. You MUST become preoccupied with the well being of that family. A good in-law makes sure to befriend the siblings of the wife, support, and protect them. The position you occupy is special in the sense that if you fail to live upto the expectations of the family you have married into, such a family reserve the right to excommunicate you. This is simply culture & tradition.

Kizza Besigye has been in detention since after he was abducted while in Kenya and later transferred to Uganda, detained, and currently faces treason charges. His case has since become a major regional human rights issue.

I remember when NRM apologists were all over, castigating us for using the word 'abduction' to describe the horrific state-led enforced disappearances of our people in those unmarked vehicles. "The state does not abduct, it arrests", they coldy said.

Many went as far as mocking the victims, eagerly regurgitating the propaganda of regime officials who claimed that the abducted and missing had traveled abroad for kyeeyo!

Now, as the machinery turns and more of their own are targeted, their vocabulary has suddenly caught up with the reality—they are loudly calling for an end to "abductions, kidnaps, and seizures."

Isn't it tragic that some people must first experience oppression firsthand just to recognize it? Should it take personal victimization for one to develop a conscience?

One day, you’ll also want to apologize to the Ugandans you’ve abducted and tortured in your so-called basement; to the mothers whose husbands and sons you murdered and denied even a decent burial; and to the women whose dignity you demeaned and whose bodies you objectified.

You’ll wish you could take back the reckless and hateful things you’ve said on X-the insults, threats, evil confessions and obscenities. But history offers no delete button.
Your apology today should remind you that the day will come when you are asking Ugandans for forgiveness but by then, history will already have passed its judgment.
