Over the past few days, one thing has become very clear. Today’s children are being shaped by everything ONLINE 📌

From gaming…to social media…to AI-generated content…

The risks are everywhere

As @UCC_Official wraps up conversations around #ChildOnlineProtection, maybe the real question is: What are we actually doing about it?

Here are a few things that stood out for me:

📌 Teach children early about privacy, scams, and online behaviour
📌 Set clear boundaries on what they access and how long they stay online
📌 Pay attention to who they interact with (not everyone is who they claim to be)
📌 Watch out for red flags; secrecy, sudden requests, emotional manipulation
📌 Use available tools; parental controls, screen time limits, monitoring apps

PLEASE REMEMBER!!! The goal is not to stop children from using the internet, but to ensure they are safe while using it.

Kudos to @UCC_Official, @UgCERT @MoICT_Ug, for pushing this conversation where it matters most, with the children themselves. Now the responsibility shifts to all of us #WorldConsumerRightsDay2026

If a child experiences cyberbullying, remind them not to respond or engage.
Encourage them to keep evidence, block the offender, tighten their privacy settings, and report the incident to the school or the platform.

Screen time management isn’t just a challenge for children……even adults struggle with it. Globally, the average screen time for children ranges between 3 to 7 hours a day.

The key isn’t only limiting time, but creating healthy balance.
Supervise the screen, not just the child, and help them unplug for rest, play, and real-world connection.

• Set daily screen time limits
• Enable parental controls
• Encourage offline activities
• Most importantly, lead by example — children mirror what they see

Random checks on phones to see which apps are installed on our children’s phones, but also to see who they’re chatting with.

We do this while reminding them that this isn’t to punish them but to protect them. Have conversations with them about the dangers that could befall them

Online child protection in Uganda is advancing through a blend of legislation, awareness efforts, reporting services, and community engagement. The approach is multi-sectoral, involving:
✅Government agencies @ConsumerUCC & @NITAUganda1
✅Legal protections under national law
✅Hotline and school outreach for reporting abuse
✅Civil society organisations driving education and advocacy

However, stakeholders and researchers continue to call for stronger laws, better digital parenting education, and enhanced reporting tools to keep pace with evolving online risks

Some of the most entertaining times at school were the days we got visitors because... NO CLASS!!!

I remember career day while in Kibuli S.S. Those free periods disguised as education. We always sat in those briefings with the biggest smiles on our faces, and heard absolutely nothing.

Now I'm an adult and I understand what those visitors were actually trying to tell us. WALAHI I wish I'd listened more to some of that advice back then.

Here's the truth nobody says out loud: A child cannot be expected to carry the weight of their own protection. That's just not how childhood works.

So when @UCC_Official visits schools this week as part of the #WorldConsumerRightsDay2026 campaign on Child Online Protection, some children will smile, some will listen but MOST, will just be happy they're not in class.

And that's okay because this message was never really for them. The #childonlineprotection is actually for;

📌 The parent who handed their child a phone without a conversation.
📌 The teacher who assumes someone else already had the talk.
📌 The guardian who thinks danger only exists outside the home.

The child is already online, like it or not. The question is who is standing with them while they are? The UCC team has done a commendable job with the school visits, radio programs and the regional outreach.

But a campaign has an end date... However, parenting doesn't. First thing's first. When do you think is the right time to hand your child access to their own phone?

The Uganda Communications Commission @UCC_Official has been actively rolling out its Child Online Protection campaign across various regions, including Central, Gulu, Western (e.g Mbarara), Eastern (e.g Mbale), and Masindi. Through school outreach and community engagements.

This aims at teaching the communities about what online child protection is,risks involved and how to mitigate these risks.

This is yielding postive results as children are actively engaging and learning from this campaign.
