#uwj201 After looking into the central and peripheral route, I'm curious if there are trends in regard to which demographics are more impacted by each route. Do y'all feel more impacted by peripheral or central route advertising? #uwj201 #322
@amanykay I was definitely able to group them into the "peripheral" and "central" categories, however there was quite a lot of diversity between them. I think that this is natural when looking at a top 15 list, as all of the ads found a way to strike a cord that hadn't been done before.
@smcrane8 I think that they are definitely more likely to consider buying the product, because the commercial built an emotional connection between the consumer and the product. #uwj201 #322
After studying ways that journalists report, what style of reporting do you think is the most damaging/most prone to lead to more disinformation? What can we, as news gathering people, do to limit this spread and ensure we consume unbiased, objective journalism? #uwj201 #322
@uwaghenckel@davalos I think that something has to be done about the ownership of social media, as the spread of information and news through social media is certainly undermining the regulations that traditional news organizations follow (esp. regarding % ownership of the market) #j201 #322
@isabellae_xoxo I think that the development of 24/7 news in the 90s and the rise of social media has caused there to be a more contradictory information circulating. I also think that social media has given the younger generation a larger platform to speak on issues such as these #j201 #322
#uwj201 #322 Thinking about the future of fact-checking: Do y'all think that bias/partisan behavior will begin infiltrating fact-checking organizations, just as it has news outlets? Will this be successful? If so, how do media consumers combat this?
@abby11430 I think because of how accessible digital media and mass media is, news channels that partake in some levels of false reporting will (unfortunately) continue, as there are enough people to fit these specific niches to make it profitable #UWJ201 #322
@FenlonJudd We have built a culture of people willing to go back to outlets that have contributed to false reporting. If media digesters as a collective were to demand outlets submit to accurate reporting by turning off outlets who don't, we would be able to influence reporting integrity.
#UWJ201 #322 I'm curious, are there changes that media can make regarding how the report that would lessen the effects of HME? If not, what steps have y'all thought of implementing in your own lives to lessen the effects of HME on yourselves?
@LukeSill3 It creates an aggregate of all media sources reporting on a specific headline, and then will grade them on political bias. I find it very useful. Below is a screenshot of the media bias shown for each source on the headline "Biden team unveils new ICE deportation guidelines"
@LukeSill3 I have definitely been guilty of falling into HME before. Recently, in an attempt to limit my bias, I have started using tools to ensure I hear both sides on specific issues. If you're interested, I recommend checking out the app "ground news" #UWj201 #322
@AllieKal3 It's interesting because social media has much more biased news on it, and biased news disqualifies HME, as HME requires the news to be even-handed. However, it will lead to heightened polarization, which could to a larger prevalence of HME in mainstream media #UWj201 #322
#UWJ201 #311 With the rise of blogs and social media being news sources, has the affects of agenda-setting been limited? Or do sources like the NYT still have as much say as they used to regarding what policy, issues, and events are covered each day?
@kaelynguyen I agree! I feel as though I only see commentators and extremist politicians on the news. I think that the media could try hosting more debates, not necessarily between the most popular politician on either side, but from politicians in office that we have never heard from before.
