I have just arrived at @FundacionMigres in Tarifa, S Spain, for 6 weeks of @Vogelwarte_scie#insectmigration fieldwork as part of @Birgen_Haest's Move in Europe project!
We have radars to monitor insects (!!) each side of the Straits of Gibraltar (1 in Ceuta, 1 in Tarifa) as well as insect traps in Tarifa, Gibraltar, and Ceuta to find out the types of insects migrating.
Here is the radar in Ceuta looking towards one of the Pillars of Hercules, the Rock of Gibraltar.
I'll be sharing loads here of the adventures I'm having.
So excited!!
Fully-funded PhD on moth trapping, automated ID, climate extremes & predator responses, with @DavidRoyBRC and me at @UniExeCEC in Cornwall. Deadline ** 29 July **. Please share! https://t.co/XLsVBbniId
A new R package just released by @bart_kra et al. (#BiodivMon) facilitates import, analysis, and visualisation of movement data, integrating with Movebank & other sources. #AnimalTracking 👇
This is going to be so useful!
Need to analyze animal tracking data in R? Just out, our (@AnneKScharf & @safilabmpi ) paper in @MethodsEcolEvol describing the R package move2 (https://t.co/CNiy6jqXsG) for analyzing movement data, including reading data directly from @MovebankTeam. https://t.co/wYGgmLznAw
📡 Studying animal movement is key for understanding ecological processes and global change impacts. A new R package from @HiRAD_Europe (#BiodivMon) facilitates import, analysis, and visualisation of movement data, integrating with Movebank & other sources. #AnimalTracking 👇
#InsectWeek
Yesterday @Birgen_Haest, Alejandro Onrubia, José Luis Ruiz and I placed an insect monitoring radar in Ceuta on the African side of the Straits of Gibraltar!
This will help us reveal whether insects are migrating between the continents!
Muchas gracias to @obimasa, @ieceuties and the local tortoises for their help.
This will join the @HiRAD_Europe network of radars monitoring aerial life.
Two of the HiRAD team (@Birgen_Haest and @WillLeoHawkes) have just arrived in Tarifa, Spain to check their radar monitoring #insectmigration across the Straits of Gibraltar!
It has been recording since March and has got such exciting data on board.
We can't wait to share all!
Excited to announce that our paper "Learning to predict spatiotemporal movement dynamics from weather radar networks" is available @MethodsEcolEvol! We use #DeepLearning to generate comprehensive bird migration forecasts. #AI4science#radar#aeroecology

What an increadible bird migration night!! On one of our bird radars in SE-Netherlands you'll see them moving SW. Computer hardly can't track all of the birds, #birdmigration, @trektellen, @vogeltrekinfo
New vacancy: Post-doctoral researcher "Aerial insect and bird movements". Are you interested to work within the MoveInEurope project of @globam_net? Then apply here: https://t.co/lfJz4FImk4 @Birgen_Haest@silke_bauer
It is wonderful to be able to come to #irac2022 and meet all these amazing researchers in the field of #aeroecology at #Davos. I am already looking forward to 2024.
What an amazing day 1 of #irac2022 talks about bats, birds, insects, AI, conservation, phenology, biodiversity, the interdisciplinary field of #radar#aerorcology @globam_net @BiodiversaPlus
