The beef started from a misunderstanding of Common’s 1994 track “I Used to Love H.E.R.” (from *Resurrection*)‼️, which Cube took as a diss toward West Coast/gangsta rap, and it escalated through diss records before being squashed‼️.

How it began (Common’s side)⁉️
Common has consistently described the song as a metaphorical history of hip-hop (personified as a woman he loved), not a targeted attack‼️. In his 2011 memoir *One Day It’ll All Make Sense* and later interviews, he said the lines about her going to the West Coast, “popping Glocks, serving rocks,” rolling with “gangsta bitches,” and “only fucks with the funk” were purely descriptive of the genre’s evolution and the West Coast’s dominance in the early/mid-90s‼️. He has noted he was a fan of Cube/N.W.A‼️. (even opening for them earlier) and had no intention of dissing a whole coast or Cube specifically‼️. A key line often cited is roughly: “I wasn’t salty she was with them Boyz N the Hood.”‼️

He first learned of Cube’s response while hanging out backstage at an Alkaholiks show (with King T and others)‼️. King T told him about the verse and downplayed it (“It ain’t really that bad”), which made Common realize it was serious.‼️ His initial reaction mixed surprise (“Damn, Cube know who I am⁉️”) with hurt and defensiveness—he felt wrongly accused of coast-bashing‼️. He said he might have let it slide, but Westside Connection kept talking trash about him on BET’s *Rap City*, which “brought my Chicago up” and forced a response‼️.

Common later recounted a tense in-person confrontation with Cube in Atlanta around 1995, after which he thought, “Man, this might get ugly.”‼️ He emphasized he was prepared to defend himself (“I’m from the South Side of Chicago… I’mma fight to kill, John Wick style”) but was glad it stayed on wax‼️.

How it began (Ice Cube’s side)⁉️
Cube has repeatedly called it a “real misunderstanding” and later a “dark moment” in his career‼️. He felt Common’s song dissed the entire West Coast/Pacific (and by extension gangsta rap, which Cube helped pioneer)‼️. In interviews (including with Talib Kweli and more recent ones), he said he was “in [his] feelings” and sensitive about any perceived slight against the West Coast at a time of heightened regional tensions‼️. He felt he needed to “take up for the West Coast.”‼️

Cube (with Mack 10 and WC, early Westside Connection) responded on Mack 10’s 1995 track “Westside Slaughterhouse” with lines including‼️:
“All you suckas wanna diss the Pacific, but you busta n***as never get specific / Used to Love H.E.R., mad ‘cause we fucked her / Pussy-whipped bitch with no Common Sense / Hip-hop started in the West…”‼️

Cube has said Common “didn’t deserve it” and that it was never a true personal vendetta once they talked it out—just a misreading of the record‼️.

Escalation and resolution⁉️
Common fired back hard on the Pete Rock-produced “The Bitch in Yoo” (1996, later on *One Day It’ll All Make Sense*), calling out Cube directly (using his real name O’Shea/Hosea in places), questioning his recent output (“You ain’t made shit dope since *AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted*”), and rejecting the idea that he’d diss a whole coast‼️.

Things cooled after the murders of Tupac and Biggie‼️. Minister Louis Farrakhan mediated a sit-down at the Nation of Islam headquarters in Chicago in 1997 (attended by various artists including Snoop, Tha Dogg Pound, Bone Thugs, Mack 10, WC, Fat Joe, Chuck D, and others)‼️. Both men have described the resolution as genuine and lasting‼️no residual animosity‼️. They later collaborated (e.g., the song “Real People” and co-starring in *Barbershop: The Next Cut*), with Cube noting it showed people that even a beef can be reconciled “with your brother.”‼️

In short: Common’s allegorical critique of hip-hop’s direction was read by Cube as a West Coast/gangsta-rap diss; Cube responded on wax in defense of the coast; Common answered aggressively when the talk continued‼️
