You can't directly compare medieval guilders to modern cash. Almost no one was on "salary". Your employees were apprentices, serfs, or relatives. You could live an entire happy and prosperous life and never own an actual silver coin.

@speakerjohnash The difference was that the criticism was mostly limited to environmentalists in California, where environmentalist organizations have an outsized impact. It wasn't a national issue like datacenters.
At the time I was critical of vegans for saying veganism was environmentalist.

It's odd that the pro-AI people and the pro-mass transit people don't align on what seems to be the perfect crossover issue: self-driving mass transit.
Self-driving trains seems like a no brainer, but there is no overlap in the advocates for these issues.

I'm reading a biography on Deng right now and it is clear that he was a better leader in every way than Mao was. Equally as ruthless, but without the delusions and personality flaws that made Mao a disaster.
Even his famous sayings are more astute.
