Last week I spent an evening on Gitanga Road, Lavington, exchanging notes with some friends. Somewhere between the conversation and the second round of drinks, it hit me that Nairobi is way bigger than the city we think we know.

See, we walk around thinking it’s just us here. Kenyans hustling among Kenyans, complaining about the same things, living the same story. We size up this city based on what we grew up seeing.

But that evening opened my eyes to a completely different Nairobi. One of my friends mentioned a West African guy running a cloud kitchen empire from an apartment two streets away. Another brought up Somalis, flying in from abroad, quietly running some of the biggest oil companies in this country. Someone else knew a European who’d moved here just to start a business. Nigerians, Ugandans, Congolese all building something real, all calling this city home.

And it’s not just about who’s here. It’s about how they’re living. While the average Nairobian is haggling over an 800 shilling phone case, calling it expensive, there’s a whole class of people in this same city who won’t even glance at anything under 5,000 for their iPhone. Different Nairobi. Same city.
By the time I left Gitanga Road that night, I understood something I hadn’t before.

There’s a whole ecosystem running quietly beneath the Nairobi we think we know. Cloud kitchens. Oil money. International capital. Businesses most of us will never hear about, happening a few kilometers from where we sleep every night.
Nairobi isn’t just a Kenyan city. It’s an African city. Maybe even a global one. And it’s a lot bigger and a lot richer than most of us think.
