@Ms_Williams085 That's definitely a challenge especially at younger ages when kids aren't always as organized I wish. Typically my students would just take work home to, but then it runs the risk of getting lost. Teaching them how to organize folders and write their names has been the objective.
@MaddieLaszewski That's a good idea. Personally I always found centers to do good when I was a student in English classes. Looking back I think it helps break larger subjects down, so that are easier to study.
#EDU310 During my 2nd observation a student made a whistling that apparently disturbed a student with a hearing aid. The teacher singled the kid out and was harsh with him. I thought the issue was handled poorly and my Supervisor agreed. I noticed how awkward it made the class
@carleyymeredith I took my field trips for granted when I was in K-12. It wasn't until I toured colleges and wrote an in depth history report in college that I really started to value field trips. Definitely something I'll keep in mind. I hope your students appreciated the learning experience!
@AleDualLang My mentor teacher used to warn me whenever there was a holiday or an extended weekend, because of bad behavioral. I always thought she was exaggerating until the kids showed up to class bouncing off the walls. Structure in the class in my experience plays a big role in learning.
#EDU310 I worked with a group of special ed students. Initially I felt like a fish out of water, but I quickly built rapport with the students. I was impressed with their tenacity, progress, and degree of indepence. Some students just need a tiny bit of support to be successful.
@matel010 If a buddy check is what I think it is that's a good idea. I've started to notice a few of my students are quite and won't speak out if something is wrong.
@edumissv Those highlighters are like magical wands sometimes. I've found students who struggle with Reading benefit quite a bit from re-reading a passage with a highlighter.
#EDU310 Students were working on a geography assignment in class and my mentor brought up how students weren't aware of key locations in the United States. Apparently since the geography standards are so broad a common issue is that students aren't being taught basics of geog.
@joshua_mclinn@MissCorn__ I find the reactions of the students hilarious when people they don't know come in. In my experience the students always act differently especially when they sit right next to the new person. In my case when my supervisor came in she was actually teaching two students nearby.
@ReeceWorac001 @joshua_mclinn Initially I thought it was a waste of a school day to celebrate Halloween, but I don't think anything productive would have happened anyway since the kids are so rowdy. I found there are educational ways to celebrate Halloween anyways.
#EDU310 A student I see oftenhad about 90% of his assignment done until he lost it. Given his history he shouldn't be allowed to take work home when he loses it, there is a study period in school, and kids leave work at school anyways. I've tried organizing his bag and giving ✏️s
@pinnowmiranda1 I'd agree. In my experience it seems like you have to balance thorough explanation and the attention span of the students. I had a similar experience to you earlier this year and I felt out of place, because I wasn't familiar with the lesson or how students typically acted.
@Miss_ZoeK That sounds exciting! The kids are always so funny with their costumes, I had one kids dress as a whoopi cushion and the other drew a mustache on his face. I think this free time around holidays gives students time to catch up on work and give chances for fun educational games.
#EDU310 It was apparent when I was working with my kids making maps that they often overlook instructions and don't ask when they get stuck. I found that making individual time to check each student even for 30 seconds can make the difference between barely passing and excelling.
@MsRacitiTeaches It seems like flexible seating can have a big impact. I can't say there's any big differentiation when it comes to seating in my class, but other things like colored pens encourage students to work. I find hilarious when students only write with a certain colored pen!
@MrChitoC That looks like a ton of fun although I don't follow soccer myself. That looks like a great way to connect with the students in class. Personally I've started to see the importance of those connections built with students through fun activities like this in my own class.
#EDU310 I was teaching about plotting points on a grid. Some students seemed to excel while others struggled at... points. I found it interesting to see the diff abilities within the class given that 6th grade is a big transition period especially if they're from diff schools.
@tony_sertic It seems like technology is always a hit or a miss with me. My 6th grade class goes insane for certain online activities and other times half the class can't use their computers, because the battery is dead. Using technology seems to require patients and preparation at times.
