Filmmaker Ken Burns doesn't want America's complicated history to be overly simplified.

"You can't water it down," Burns said. "It is really complicated, and you have to tell that complication. Everyone is drawn to the stories that are real and complicated. And any idea of boiling it down to simplistic slogans is not American."

Burns spoke to PBS News Hour's Jeffrey Brown about his latest work, "The American Revolution," which examines the beginnings of our nation's democratic experiment. The six-part, 12-hour series on America's origin comes at a time of deep divisions and as the nation is still wrestling with itself and the very idea of democracy.

"Understanding the origin story and understanding what the intention was of the creation of the United States as it morphed and as it changed as it went along helps us today understand not only where we are, but where we could be going," he said. https://t.co/MPR0hAEZ1g

His efforts culminated in the formation of the League of Corinth, which united much of Greece under Macedonian leadership and prepared the ground for a coordinated campaign against Persia. Philip’s vision combined conquest with careful statesmanship, balancing fear and respect.
