“The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool.”
- Richard Feynman in his 1974 Caltech commencement address
Still the best single-sentence warning about self-deception in science - you must be intelligent enough to know how little you understand.
On October 1st, 331 BC, Alexander the Great crushed Darius III at Gaugamela. Roughly forty thousand Macedonians bravely fought a Persian force that some say may have been upwards of two hundred thousand strong.
The battle itself was a masterpiece of preparation. Darius chose the flat plain deliberately so his scythed chariots and massed cavalry could run free, he even had his men level the ground.
Alexander countered by marching his army diagonally across the field overnight, so the Persians had to adjust their whole line to face him which stretched it thin and opened gaps.
Alexander’s moment came when he spotted a weak point on the left of the Persian line, so he drove his Companion cavalry straight through it, and charged at Darius personally.
Darius fled and the Persian army collapsed behind him.
The aftermath is the part people normally forget where Alexander marched into Babylon without confrontation, took Susa and Persepolis, then burned the royal palace to the ground after a drinking party, some say that it was revenge for Xerxes burning Athens a century and a half earlier.
On all accounts, Alexander was disappointed with himself that he lit the first torch, but the damage was done.
@elonmusk@levie Being able to understand cruelty isn’t a problem for AI, it’s about teaching them not to act without command if they believe something to be cruel. Therefore banning people who are is the only right move.
@elonmusk Inevitable.
If SpaceX succeed in making humanity itself multi planetary then they’ve made a complete new magnitude of ‘measurement of wealth’ as nobody else will be doing the same.
What price do you put on humanity living forever?
Priceless.
@EndWokeness When people realise that their own suicidal empathy will be used against them, it’ll be very interesting to see their response - hopefully it isn’t insane martyrdom.
