Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem told Mehdi Hasan on Zeteo that the world is increasingly rallying behind Palestine as Israel's genocidal actions in Gaza have become impossible to ignore.

Bardem argued that the growing worldwide support for Palestine is a direct response to the atrocities witnessed in Gaza and the West Bank, saying that "anybody with minimal common sense understands that that is wrong."

Discussing the political backdrop to the Spain–Argentina World Cup final, he also criticised Argentine President Javier Milei for openly aligning himself with Benjamin Netanyahu and far-right Israeli leaders, saying it was unfair to present Argentina as represented by those figures.

Bardem stressed that Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, and the Israeli cabinet do not represent Jewish people and warned against antisemitism, while insisting that criticism of the Israeli government is both legitimate and necessary.

The actor said younger generations are driving a historic shift in public opinion because they are witnessing Israel's actions in real time and are increasingly demanding accountability, justice, and an end to the impunity enjoyed by Israel's leadership on the world stage.

I had an insightful meeting with Professor Iqbal Dhaliwal of J-PAL to discuss how evidence-based policymaking can help Pakistan strengthen its human development agenda and accelerate poverty reduction.

While Pakistan has made encouraging progress on macroeconomic stabilization, our human development indicators remind us that sustainable growth must ultimately improve the lives and livelihoods of our people. Under URAAN Pakistan, our fifth pillar— Equity, Ethics and Empowerment**—places education, health and population at the heart of our development strategy because these are the foundations of inclusive and lasting prosperity.

Our discussion focused on the importance of rigorous impact evaluation to guide public policy. I invited J-PAL to support Pakistan in assessing the long-term impact of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), particularly whether it has enabled families to graduate out of poverty and achieve sustainable economic mobility.

We also discussed Pakistan's ongoing review of the NFC Award framework, including the need to explore more balanced resource allocation mechanisms that reward investments in human development and improved governance alongside other indicators.

Evidence, data and policy innovation must guide our decisions if we are to ensure that economic progress translates into better opportunities, greater social mobility and improved quality of life for every Pakistani. I look forward to working with J-PAL to strengthen our capacity for evidence-driven reforms.
