For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter.
AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country.
Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.

Under President Trump’s leadership, common sense, scientific integrity, and accountability have been restored to federal food and health policy.
For decades, the Dietary Guidelines favored corporate interests over common-sense, science-driven advice to improve the health of Americans.
That ends today.
The new Dietary Guidelines call for prioritizing high-quality protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—and avoiding highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates.
@AlexanderQuote This quote is anterior to Alexander the Great. It can be found in Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War, specifically in the Melian Dialogue.
I listened to Charlie Munger's A Lesson on Elementary Worldly Wisdom when I was 21 and was immediately sold on the idea that mental models can make you a better thinker, predictor, decision maker, and investor.
Ten years later my conviction in the power of mental models has only increased. I have spent the last >10 years putting together a list of mental models in my spare time and am sharing it below in case any of you find it helpful.

@elonmusk False. The High Middle Ages in Catholic Europe met this criteria, and the population doubled in size. The beliefs, values, and social norms were in keeping with truth and natural law, including the sacredness of life. The loss of these anchors explains the situation today.

@readswithravi@dollarsanddata I bought the Audible version yesterday on your recommendation. It's a good book, but the Audible version has a major flaw: it constantly refers to an accompanying PDF that Audible doesn't provide.
"In order to make a decision you need to focus on the consequences (which you can know) rather than the probability (which you can’t know) is the central idea of uncertainty." - Nassim Nicholas Taleb
“The greatest people are self-managing. They don’t need to be managed. Once they know what to do, they’ll go figure out how to do it. What they need is a common vision, and that’s what leadership is.”

Our Christian unity, life and mission is close to my heart, shown in St. Augustine’s words that I chose for my episcopal motto: In Illo uno unum.
Christ is our Saviour and in Him we are one, a family of God, beyond the rich variety of our languages, cultures and experiences.

10 applications of smart contract code for nonbelievers —
Consider one of the core strengths of Internet finance: code that can make commitments. This is the foundation of smart contracts. @cdixon compares smart contract code to a vending machine in which you input a dollar and receive a Coca-Cola. Smart contracts allow you to write code that responds to inputs in predetermined ways. A smart contract can release a soda when it receives a dollar, or it can release collateral when it receives complete principal and interest payments.
The beauty of smart contract code is that it allows you to automate much financial activity and expands the design space for the types of financial products you can create. Consider an escrow agreement as an easy example. When you buy a house, an escrow agent takes custody of both funds and the house deed before releasing the assets to both sides to ensure that both sides honor their commitments (e.g., the seller cannot take funds and walk away). Smart contract code means you don't need an escrow agent — only an escrow contract that checks for both assets and releases them when the appropriate conditions are met.
Here are a few ideas of things you can build with smart contract code:
1. Royalties contract that receives streamed payments every time a song is played on Spotify. You can then use this stream of payments as collateral on a lending market. You could own a small piece of All Too Well (Taylor's Version) through fractionalization.
2. Streaming dividends to shareholders. You can even split these into multiple share classes — what would you pay for a share that paid you $0.0001 every time Apple sells an iPhone? You can do streaming payroll as well.
3. Bespoke capital raising instruments for specific products. Starbucks can issue a revenue share token only for its new batch of 200 stores in the Pacific Northwest, and market prices can inform management about the value of its expansion plan.
4. LLM credit funds. A machine learning algorithm written by a small team of talented engineers can underwrite millions of loans across the world. This type of LLM would probably make some mistakes that would have been caught by a human but what matters is the overall loss rate plus expense ratio.
5. Continuous hedging. A global coffee company in Central America can use an open-source asset-liability matching program to maintain a continuous hedge on its commodity exposure. I actually know somebody who blew up a big coffee company because his CFO was doing quarterly hedging.
6. Lending market that enforces penalties and releases collateral according to a payment schedule. We are used to this onchain but its an incredible achievement to liquidate / repo somebody's collateral without dozens of intermediate steps. In a few years your car will stop driving when you miss a payment.
7. Life insurance that pays out claims upon receipt of a certified death certificate. You can have insurance transfer automatically as well. This takes >60 days right now.
8. Property & Casualty insurance that pays out claims based on the approval of a trusted claims adjuster.
9. Cleverly designed orderbook can replace entire floors of traders in midtown Manhattan. This already happened with Uniswap (>$800B annual volume) and Raydium (>$900B of volume).
10. Escrowed capital markets. You can raise $10M on the Internet but only have permission to spend $1M — you need to prove progress to token holders for additional disbursements. @MetaDAOProject is building this.
This is a tiny subset of what is possible. We used to play this game constantly in 2020. It is the type of rhetoric that brought me into the industry.
Everybody who is left is talking about technical infrastructure or posting price charts with technical analysis, and it's even become jejune to talk about all of the incredible applications that are still in the future. The industry feels fatigued right as we are approaching the S-curve.
Believe in something.

This ruling is absolutely insane!
How on Earth are we supposed to stop fraud and waste of taxpayer money without looking at how money is spent?
That’s literally impossible!
