Please fact-check me: Akwete cloth originated from Ijebu. You can read about it in the British historian John Gillow's 2003 book African Textiles: Colour and Creativity Across a Continent.

The Ijebu have been trading with the Ijaw for centuries. Many prominent Ijaws are actually Ijebu. For example, former Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson, is an Ijebu man. He is from the Awujale's palace. His family went to trade in Ijaw land 200 years ago and never returned. Please fact-check me.

For hundreds of years, the Ijebu sold a fabric known as kaki to the Ijaws. Only in the 19th Century did the Ijaws in Ndoki resell Ikaki fabric to Igbo women from a village called Akwete.

Those women began making a version of Ikaki, which the Igbos called Akwete cloth. It did not originate with them.

January 15, 1966: The Coup That Changed Nigeria Forever

The January 15, 1966 military coup remains one of the most controversial events in Nigeria's history. It has often been described as an "Igbo coup" because most of the principal coup plotters were Igbo officers, while many of the country's top political and military leaders killed were from the Northern and Western Regions.

Among those killed were:

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa – Prime Minister of Nigeria.
Ahmadu Bello – Premier of Northern Nigeria.
Samuel Ladoke Akintola – Premier of Western Nigeria.
Festus Okotie-Eboh – Federal Minister of Finance.
Samuel Ademulegun – Brigadier.
Zakariya Maimalari – Brigadier.
Ralph Shodeinde – Colonel.
Kur Mohammed – Lieutenant Colonel.
James Pam – Lieutenant Colonel.
Abogo Largema – Lieutenant Colonel.

Meanwhile, prominent Eastern leaders such as Michael Okpara and Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi survived, with Ironsi later becoming Head of State.

Regardless of where one stands, the perception of the January 1966 coup had far-reaching consequences. It shaped Nigeria's politics, led to the July 1966 counter-coup, and contributed to the chain of events that culminated in the Nigerian Civil War.
