One of the most severe marine heatwaves on Earth has developed off the coast of Ireland and the UK, with water temperatures as high as 4-5°C above normal.
NOAA's Marine Heatwave Watch has categorized this event as a Category 4 (extreme) marine heatwave.
I know there are a million people sharing temperature anomaly charts and maps lately, but there's a good reason for that. This is totally bonkers and people who look at this stuff routinely can't believe their eyes. Something very weird is happening.
@gotacommonname Wwoooofft that is pretty vertiginous! Looks so awesome, but imo nothing nothing more awesome than listening to gut and having the courage to call time on a hike that feels too risky for whatever reason. To me that sounds like a really impressive day on ALL the levels! 👏💪
