Moved countries to build medical hardware. Knew no one in the industry here. I sent dozens of messages into the void — a handful wrote back. One gave me 30 minutes I still use today.

Now I'm the one being messaged. So I write back.

Fifteen years ago I cold-emailed an engineer I admired. I braced for silence. He replied in two hours.

That call changed my career.

Now I build a medical device of my own — and I answer the emails. Costs me 20 minutes, might change someone's year. Pay it forward.

Who answered your email back when you were nobody?

A few people gave me their time for free when I had nothing to offer. I couldn't pay them back.

So now I answer. When a younger founder reaches out, I make the time.

That's the whole economy of mentorship: pay it forward.

What actually matters in life?
We spend years answering it wrong, and a few seconds answering it right.
This Father's Day my son handed me one of those seconds a card:
"Dear Dad... I get to spend more time with my kind father with a warm heart."
That's the answer.
